What are the best reasonably priced hotels in the area? Either walking distance or shuttle - either option is fine. Would be great to have one with its own restaurant, too.

Thanks for the feedback.

That will give me a better idea of what to recommend.

Good question. I guess I should have said "moderately priced" - not the bare-bones cheapest, but not the most expensive either. Is there a hotel that you feel gives a great value for the money??

Depending what your looking for you might try Getawaytoday. If i remember correctly all their packages include some tickets. So you best bet would just subtract ticket prices and that will give you per night prices that might fit your price range. Sometimes you can get the third or fourth night free. :confused3

within walking distance. These hotels are an even closer walk to get to the front gate than staying at the Disneyland hotel. These hotels I have found to be around $90 per night, sometimes cheaper, sometimes not.

Fairfield Inn by Marriott -- I have stayed there many times and it is a nice hotel, but a little bit of a walk.

Carousel Inn -- Part of my family has stayed there and liked it.

Tropicana -- I haven't stayed there, but I have heard good things.

Park Inn -- Same as Tropicana

Best Western Park Place Inn -- this is directly across from the crosswalk -- I am going to try it in May.

Anaheim Desert Inn and Suites -- probably the best deal of the bunch. It is not a fancy hotel, but is was clean and they have big suites if you have a big group (we have 4 kids).

I ususally find the best deals on Travelocity --- usually better than the acutal hotel's website.

I do know how to spell actual actually.

Candy cane inn (CCI) is currently the top rated hotel, on www.tripadvisor.com, in the area. Its about $100-120 a night, includes breakfast and has a free shuttle.

Howard Johnson (Hojo's) is next in line for ratings. Has great service. Is about the same distance as the CCI (opposite direction), but does not offer a shuttle. About $100 a night- you can join www.laughingplace.com forum and get a discount on your stay. They also have entertainment card rates, but that does require booking way in advance.

Fairfield is pretty nice. Its about $130 a night. Its one hotel closer to the enterance then Hojo's.

We've stayed at the Tropicana, Carousel and Annabella. The Annabella was wonderful, but was a little too far. We prefer to walk instead of taking the shuttle. We tend to stay at the Carousel if we don't stay at a Disney Hotel. It is clean and very close, plus it has a continental breakfast which is a benefit too. I think the Tropicana was recently refurbished. I wasn't as nice as the Carousel when we stayed there several years ago, but it may be nicer now.

I've had really good luck getting rates for the Carousel at their web site. For some reason Getawaytoday doesn't offer them, but they do have the Tropicana and Anabella. I LOVE Getawaytoday. You should definitely look at their web site or call them.

We (and our friends) have stayed at the:

- Anaheim Marriott...Priceline.com for $60/night (first time on Priceline and ended up paying about $15 too much per night).
- Hyatt Orange County...Priceline.com for $40/night once and $30/night another time.
- Crowne Plaza...Priceline.com for $40/night.
- Anaheim Hilton...paid $99/night on the Hilton website for a standard room.

For our upcoming trip:

- Doubletree Anaheim...Priceline.com for $50/night.

We LOVED the Anaheim Marriott and the Hyatt. We got a kidsuite at the Hyatt, which was spacious and had been recently renovated when we were there in 2004. The Hyatt was also adjacent to a Target, which was handy to get snacks and bottled water. Crowne Plaza was OK, average. The Hilton was the worst and the most expensive that we paid. The room was badly in need of renovation and the bathroom was dingy and had grout all over. If you were in an Executive Level room, you'd be fine. But a standard room was what you'd see in a cheap motel. As another poster suggested, read Tripadvisor. I have always gotten good advice from there and most descriptions are quite accurate.

All the hotels we stayed at had the shuttle (Hyatt and Crowne Plaza) or the ART (Hilton and Marriott). We didn't use the ART when we stayed at the Hilton or Marriott. We walked with our 2 DDs (who were 3 and 6) to/from each day. It's a 10-15 minute walk.

Have fun planning your trip!

I have stayed at:

Howard Johnson's. Nice, older hotel with spacious rooms and a very nice kiddie pool area (the regular pool is just that, regular). It also has very nice grounds that are immaculately maintained. Very nice staff that are all very helpful. The walk will vary as far as opinions. I thought it was a bit far, especially in the evenings and also its uphill as you return to the hotel. In the mornings after a good night's rest and with the anticipation of going to the park it didn't seem bad at all. I found the rooms to be a bit dated, as I recall our bathroom looked very old. I would stay there again if I got a good rate but I have found hotels just a few doors up on Harbor much closer to the main gate of Disneyland I like better. Also, some of the rooms at the HoJo sit about 20 feet from the I-5 freeway and can be very noisey. We didn't get one of those but I have heard some reviews regarding that that were not so good. No free breakfast but they have a nice gift shop that sells reasonably priced items right there. There is also two nice, affordable sit down places next door and a McDonald's a few doors up.

Park Inn: Better location than the HoJo. Not nearly as nice of a pool area, although this is a great spot to watch the fireworks. Smaller rooms that were very dark and very worn when we stayed there. TV never worked right the whole time and they could never be bothered to fix it, in fact they told us, "oh all the tv's don't work right". Not too biggie since we didn't go to watch tv but I do like to have something to keep the kids occupied during the morning and watch the weather. No landscaping, it is a small motel, above a parking lot. Free, minimal continental breakfast. Our room was clean, just really old and dark, however I believe this hotel is being rennovated right now.

Tropicana: We just stayed there for five nights a week ago and loved it. Even closer to the crosswalk than the Park Inn, newer, lighter, refurbed rooms and some pretty landscaping that while not as extensive as the HoJo's lovely grounds made for a nice touch. Incredibly clean rooms. I have never had such a clean bathroom at any hotel. Small but nice pool area, there is also a hottub but no kiddie pool. Really nice staff, they were always out washing windows and sidewalks, sweeping, trimming the bushes and just keeping the place well maintained. The room is not large but not small either. We were able to easily accomodate the four of us and set up the rollaway no problem each night. This has been by far my favorite of the three offsite hotels I have stayed at. Minimal but okay free continental breakfast just like the Park Inn's, which incidentally is owned by the same people.

At all three of these hotels I paid less than $100 a night. I hope this helps. And even though I haven't stayed there, I can't help but recommend the Candy Cane which just seems to get the best overall reviews. But its not that close but they do have a shuttle. I have always wanted to stay there and it just hasn't worked out. And now that we have found the Tropicana I will probably stick with that. That location cannot be beat! Good luck!

I am editing to add that pretty much every place within walking distance (inlcuding the three I mentioned above) of Disneyland is a motel, not hotel. Normally I don't like motels and spring for a Hyatt or Hilton. For Disneyland however, we spend so little time in the room that the above motels were just fine. I still love the Disneyland Hotel the best, but its too darn expensive for all our trips! If you want a hotel, that is cheaper than the onsite properties you need to go with the Anaheim Hilton, a Marriott or Hyatt, none of which are walking distance. There is also the Sheraton Anaheim. It is generally cheaper than the Hilton, has a free shuttle and a restuaurant and looks really nice. That's another place I would like to try out sometime. Their rates have been so high the last few times I have checked it wouldn't be that much more to stay onsite. Within walking distance away however there is either motels, or more expensive hotels like the onsite properties.

In the last five years I've stayed at every motel/hotel on the strip, directly accross from DL as well as HoJos and CCI. I've stayed at HoJos at least 8 of the last 12 times I've visited - 3 other times on property and once at CCI. My family prefers HoJos to all the other strip motels. CCI is definitely nice but I like interior entrances (I always end up with a smoker next to me and the smoke blows through heater/air conditioning unit) and the pool was a wee bit small. HoJos has the interior entrance to the rooms, two pools, the main one is considerably larger than CCI's. I'd recommend either one to friends. I can't remember the name but one place I would never consider staying at again has an indoor pool - next to Dennys, I think. We had nothing but problems on the two occassions we have stayed there. Fool me once....

Our family of six stayed at Best Western Park Place Inn last summer and it worked very well for us.

The rooms weren't spectacular, but they were reasonably priced, comfortable & clean. We also appreciated the larger refrigerators. They were a little bigger than what you usually get in a hotel room.

And the best feature, they are right across the street from the main gate!

I always stay at the HoJo..(about once a month). It took us a while to find this place, but once we stayed there, we never went back to any of the other mod. hotels. The staff is wonderful. They will really go out of their way to help you if things get rough. I even know someone who was given a set of Disney clothes for her and her son when they learned that her luggage was lost.

We adore the CCi - highly recommend it. Very close for walking, it's own shuttle, great breakfast, nice rooms!

We have stayed at the Hojos (2), Anaheim Desert Inn and Suites (2), Park Inn International, Best Western Park Place and would stay at any of them again. They are nothing fancy, but are a clean place to stay. The extra room of the parlor suite is really nice now that we are a family of 4.

We stayed at the Howard Johnson and loved it - great price, great service, nice clean rooms and very safe.

We thought the 10 minute walk was a very easy stroll - even with 2 kids at the end of a long day.

But, as you've seen here, both HoJo and CCI have lots of fans on this site, and as they rate 3 and 2 on trip advisor (the much, much more expensive Disney Grand California is number one) you can see these views are pretty widely held.

The one problem both hotels suffer from is that because they rate so highly, some expect them to be 5 star - they are not, But for what they are, well priced moderate hotels, the Hojo, at least, is superb.

The difference appears to be that with CCI you get a small breakfast, where as with HoJo you have to buy your own across the street at the superb Mimi's. The Hojo also has a great heated pool and kids wetplay area, and, as mentioned, a nice shop with all the basics.
