Hi there,

My mum has recently started eating gluten free for health reasons and I was wondering what the best local supermarket would be for gluten free foods? Are there any brands we should look out for? Do gluten free products tend to be in their own section?

Sorry for all the questions - we are from the UK and its been hard enough getting used to it all over here!

Also, I have seen the awesome list someone kindly posted for what is available in Disneyland :goodvibes but is there anything which is particularly 'edible' ;)

Many thanks :)

We are going to DLR for 1st time in march so can't answer your specific questions, but I can tell you when we go to WDW we just tell the waiter/waitress that my son is gluton free and they get the chef who inturn comes to our table and discusses the gluten free choices with us. They were really great. Maybe staff at DLR eateries will be so accomodating

Thank you :goodvibes

As it is quite new to all of us its good to know that other people have had good experiences :)

Can't help you with supermarkets, as we usually bring our own food from home (DD3 and DS7 both have Celiac Disease), but I would imagine you could do delivery from Vons and find plenty of options there.

As for in the parks, they are great! I have never had a problem and the kids have always loved their gluten free options (GF Mickey waffles!). This might be a good place for you to start: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3003289&highlight=gluten+free

If you search "gluten free" you will find other posts related to eating GF in the parks.

Are you going to have a car? There are numerous grocery stores around and they tend to have gluten free in a particular section for the most part, but our Walmart scatters them around the store, but just ask an employee, I'm sure they can tell you about that particular store.

Henry's should have the best selection. Here's one close to the DLR. I'm sure you can email them to ask what all they have.

In Disneyland, I've heard the chili is good, but I haven't tried it. I think just about every restaurant and walk up has something GF. If you don't see a GF bun on the menu for hamburgers and hot dogs, just ask, they are sometimes not on the menu. Also, you can call ahead to DLR and speak with their team of chefs: Special Diets email: dlr.special.diets@disney.com.

Our son (celiac) went crazy for the gluten free waffles at the Polynesian. Chef even gave us the recipe.

1 3/4 cups Bob's red mill gluten free pancake mix
3/4 cup of milk, I find myself adding more to thin it out
2 eggs
1 1/2 Tbls vegetable oil

All I need is a large Mickey shaped cookie cutter! :thumbsup2

No problem at all!

You are going to find the most options at Whole Foods. (I have five GF kids) :)

Whole Foods Market, 7881 Edinger Avenue #150, Huntington Beach, CA 92647

That looks to be the closest, though there are several out there. This one is about 10 miles from Disneyland.

Everything will be marked as to whether or not it is gluten free. Specific brands are:

Udi's - they have white bread, whole grain bread, hamburger buns, hot dog buns, and bagels (the bagels are particularly good). They may also have muffins. It depends on the store.

Rudi's Gluten Free (They also make conventional breads, so make SURE it says GLUTEN FREE on the Rudi's package). They have fantastic wrap/tortillas that come in three flavors. The kids like the fiesta one and the spinach.

Schar is another wonderful brand. Their products are mostly shelf-stable. Whole Foods here has a whole aisle with gluten free foods, so you should be able to find all sorts of thing from crackers to cereal to snacks.

Enjoy Life makes gluten-free sweets and cookies that are great. The soft cookies, like chocolate chip brownies, are the kids' favorite.

Van's makes a gluten free frozen waffle.

Glutino makes good gluten free crunchy pretzels.

Second whole foods. Also Meat, salad and eggs are good bets. Watch out for scrambled eggs, sauces, etc... Ask for hamburgers with Lettuce instead of buns (Such as In and Out Burgers) However also ask if the hamburger patties are 100% beef or if they have fillers.

Thank you everyone :worship:

I have copied all your recommendations into a word doc to take with me. We will have a car and are staying in the Grand Californian Villas, which will be helpful as we can cook some things ourselves :)

Am off to pack now as we leave for the airport this afternoon to stay over night - we have our 11 1/2 hour flight tomorrow and then we'll be at Disneyland :cool1:

Thanks again :)

A little bit late, but maybe the OP will see this. I'd recommend Mother's Market in Santa Ana. It specializes in organic foods and special diets. Not the closest to DLR, but it is closer than Whole Foods. Map to many grocery stores here: http://g.co/maps/vnh5q
