Or, TP stands for Touring Plan, not toilet paper!!

Even though it's been awhile since I've been on the boards, I MUST do my TR, partly so I can do my part to help planners prepare for their trips and partly because if I don't get it down while it's fairly fresh, I might forget it. I haven't done much on the boards in a while because it kinda hurts to read about everyone's WDW plans when mine is over. Does anyone else experience that pain?

Anyway, I want to take a bit of a different approach to my TR. Since I did a PTR, I'm going to compare my plans in the PTR with what we actually did while we were in WDW. We'll see how close we came and just how valuable (or not valuable) my obsessive planning was.:teacher:

Cast of Characters and Trip Overview

:welcome:

Yay Queila! You are first!! Is that your new TR link in your siggy? I can't wait to read it now that I'm getting over my post-Disney melancholia. Did you have fun? (Of course you did).

This was our first time to ever go alone as a family. Just me and my nuclear crew. No aunts, cousins or grandparents. I was very curious to see how this would work out without hosting folks in Disney but on the flipside, I was nervous to see how we'd manage without extra help.

Our general plan:

Leave Tuesday, May 17 after DS6's kindergarten graduation driving to Orlando. Check in at Beach Club May 18 and stay through Monday, May 23.

Cast of Characters:

I am still waiting for my Photopass CD to come in to post our most recent family pics, but until then you can see pics of us here. On a side note, I am SOOOOO glad I pre-purchased that photo CD. You'll see why later.

There's me, matkensgirl, 30. I love Disney and just love travelling in general. Now that my Bigs are getting older, I want to take them to more places since they are old enough to appreciate other parts of the country besides FL. I am the planner, the detail-gal, Tower of Terror-Lover Extraordinaire. I hate waiting in lines.

Next is DH. He works hard in the restaurant business and his vacation days are precious since he only gets one full day off every other weekend. He LOVES thrill rides and sleeping in. He pretty much lets me have my way but when he actually has an opinion on something, I usually give in.

DD8 (she was still 7 on the trip) is the princess of the family. I couldn't have manufactured a more feminine girl but she is growing up fast as I learned on this trip:guilty: This trip made me fall in love with her all over again. She is a detail gal like her mom and loves to try new things. She loves to dance. She also has a sassy attitude which does not always do her favors.

DS6 is Mr. HyperCompetitive. He loves new challenges but has a wimpy side too. He has me wrapped around his little finger. He is one of those all-star kids who just seems to be good at EVERYTHING he does--sports, school, art, you name it. He has a major shy side that can make him come off as impolite sometimes.

Collectively, my older kids are known as the "Bigs".

DS2 (Wee) is the light of our family. He is very laidback and easygoing for his age and also very friendly and comparatively outgoing. He is so cute and just ramping up his little conversation abilities.

That's us and you will see our personalities come through as I share more about each day in WDW!!

You have a lovely family M'girl.....I checked out your photo link....and I am looking forward to reading more but, you're absolutely correct about feeling sad while reading about someone else's WDW trip. Sigh.
Thanks for taking the time to write.
Sharon

Thank you, BookTrout! I am so glad to know that someone sympathizes with my Post-Disney Melancholia. I know everyone gets it, but not everyone has to avoid the boards for a while until they get over it!

Well, let's get this thing started! I am going to post the text and later come back and add the pics. I know they really are what makes the TRs so awesome to read.

A quick note: thanks to a lovely 40% PIN, we were able to stay club level in Beach Club. We were on the basic Dining Plan and had Park Hoppers as well.

Also, being on the boards made me much more aware of my strategies and plans. Whenever I have a good tip to share, I'll post it in red at the bottom of my post.

First, here's my plan for Tuesday, our "Travel Day", courtesy of my PTR.

Tuesday, May 17th--This day will be bittersweet. Sweet because we are leaving for WDW but bitter because my First Buddy, DS, will be graduating Kindergarten.

I have no idea what time it will be (rest assured, that is driving me nutsola), but I am assuming mid-morning. DD will go to school as usual and I am guessing the graduation will last an hour or so. DD is in the same school as her brother, so immediately after the graduation, we will check her out of school. She is pretty thrilled that she gets to end school at the same time as her brother. Around here, kindergartners start school a week later and finish a week earlier than older kids. She was not happy about that So my best guesstimate is that we'll be on the road by 12. I will have everything packed and ready to go so we'll leave straight from school to the road. According to Mapquest, the drive is 9 hrs. 40 minutes. Adding an hour for stops/gas/potty, we'll be there around 11:40 pm EST. Oh, how I wish I was flying!!!

I am still not sure where we will stay that night, but since we are planning on getting up early to check in at BC, I was thinking we'd stay super-near WDW, like at maybe one of the Downtown Disney Hotels. Somewhere cheap but clean is all I ask.

Ideally, we'd be in bed around 12:15 am...no unpacking necessary. I pack a "one-night" bag so all we have to do is change and go.

The kindergarten at my son's school is so big that they have to do 3 ceremonies just to get all the classes in. So when is DS's? The latest possible time, 11:30 am. I had the van packed, cleaned and with a full tank of gas. I dropped the kids off at school that morning in DH's car and then came home to get ready and do some relaxing. My stomach was feeling a little unfriendly that morning as well. Of course it would!

The plan was to leave straight from graduation for WDW, but we decided to go ahead and go back home to change into our comfy clothes instead of doing that at the school. So DS graduates (getting his class's citizenship award AND the reading award...where's the proud smiley?) and we run by DD8's classroom and check her out. She was supposed to have brought all her stuff home from school on Monday but she didn't so it worked out that we went home first so we didn't have to carry her backpack and pencil case with us to FL.

We went home and changed clothes, grabbed pillows for everyone and our icebox with some sandwiches we picked up Monday from our favorite little sandwich shop (turkey sandwiches...oh so simple but so yummy). We saved those for supper.

We stopped by Wendy's for a to-go lunch and were on the road by about 1:30 pm. We drove through MS and Alabama (we usually stop at the AL welcome center, but we decided to skip it because we wanted to get through Mobile as quick as possible. On 1-10, you have to drive through a tunnel before you get on the Mobile Bay bridge and traffic always slows down considerably before you enter it. We wanted to get through before rush hour, because if you don't it's crazy!:scared1: And like I said earlier, I HATE waiting in line.

Our first stop was at the FL welcome center. There's something about that place that just makes you feel like you're on vacation. Maybe it's all the Disney brochures or the free OJ, but I can't pass that place up. Maybe, just maybe, it's the clean bathrooms!! Anyway, we used the facilities and then let the kids run around a little bit (there's a little play area). We got our free OJ (I got the grapefruit juice) and of course, DD spilled hers. We walked around for about 20 minutes taking pics with the Star Wars posters: (pics here).

And then we were back on our way. We made it a little past Tallahassee before we stopped again, this time for gas and supper (and also to avoid a state trooper that DH was worried he sped by). We picked up some drinks and snacks and used the restroom and changed DS2. The sandwich stop put mayo and tomatoes on the sandwiches so my Bigs refused to eat until I fixed them. At home, this would not fly. I'm not a crust-cutter kinda mom and they know if they don't like what I make they can make themselves a sandwich for supper. But on the road, I have to make sure they eat. So there I was crouching on the sidewalk of a gas station with a huge sub sandwich on wax paper on the ground in front of me wiping mayo off with a napkin. There are definitely some inconveniences to a road trip.:sad2:

Fortunately, that ended up being our last stop of the trip. We ate our sandwiches on the road and I read Mad Gab cards to DH to keep him alert while he drove. The kids spent time watching the DVD player (Disney movies of course) and drawing and doing puzzles. As we got closer to the Turnpike, we played a Disney Trivia game. Soon, we started paying tolls left and right and we knew we were getting close!

At about 11:30 ET, we pulled into our first hotel, Lake Buena Vista Resort and Suites. I had booked a 2-bedroom condo for $86 on Hotwire. The site said that the resort charged an additional $10 resort fee, but I never had to pay it. This was the second time we stayed here (both times for one night). We checked in and went to our room. This is very nice and clean. You can tell it is maybe 5 years or so behind the times, but it is still comfortable and modern enough. If this was the only way I could go to Disney, I would be MORE than happy to stay here. It also supposedly has a pretty awesome pirate-themed pool, but we have never stayed here long enough to see it. It is located right next to an outlet mall. I could see an Old Navy from our little patio.

I unpacked our overnight bag and our toiletry bag from the van (jammies, first-day at Disney clothes) and laid everything out for the next day. I noticed that the camera I borrowed (I do not have a digital camera right now) had a foggy lens. I rubbed it a little (this is an old camera of my mom's and the lens wouldn't cover). Well, somehow or another, I dropped it and the lens cover came apart. All the pics I took that night had a big foggy cloud right in the middle of the picture (pic here).

This was the start of something bad:headache:

Anyway, we got the Bigs to bed. Wee (DS2) sleeps on a mattress on our room and we were not comfortable leaving him with the Bigs in a place he wasn't familiar with but we didn't want to put him in bed with us (even though it was a king) because we were desperate for a quality night's sleep. So DH pulled the mattress off of the sofa bed and put it in the floor of our room. It worked dandy. I think were out by 1:15.

So I think my plan for our first day worked out pretty well even though we went to sleep an hour later than expected.
Next: Checking in and our first day at Epcot

Here are my first-day at Disney plans, courtesy of my PTR:

Wednesday, May 18 Check in by 7:30 am, have breakfast in Club Level Lounge, be in Epcot by 8:45 for 9 am rope drop. Stay in Epcot 'til lunch or until room is ready (lunch at Sunshine Seasons (yum!) or in WS) When room is ready, check out hotel, drive to DHS around 2. Snack around 3:30. Head out of park around 6 and to Fort Wilderness for Hoop-de-doo ADRs at 7:15. If we get there too early. we'll explore FW. We should be back at Hotel around 9, time to check out hotel/Boardwalk or head to bed early.

We got up about 6:15 am (please keep in mind that this corrersponds to 5:15 am CT!!). Thanks to my work the night before, we were ready quickly. I made sure I sunscreened the children liberally. That probably took longer than anything. Nothing can ruin a trip more quickly than an early sunburn! We checked out quickly and were on our way.

When we got to the Beach Club at about 7:30, we pulled to the valet and told them we were checking in Club Level. Before we even had our luggage onto the rack, someone came out and told us our room was ready. The bellhop escorted us to the concierge level. While I stopped at the desk to check-in with the concierge, DH and the kids went to the room. It took about 10 minutes to check in...a little long, I thought, but I guess I'm used to the spiel. When DH got to the room, the bellhop noticed the closet was off track so they sent someone up to fix it. While I was still at the desk, DH and the kids came back to the lounge (it is in a room behind the concierge desks). Since we purposely didn't eat breakfast before, they were a bit hungry and grabbed some fruit and pastries. Wee had his all-important chocolate milk, of course.

I joined them in the lounge and grabbed something to eat then I went back to the room to check it out. About our room:

I requested a daybed for our room since we had 5. Our room was quite a way from the CL, but there WERE rooms that were farther away. DH and I did find that a little inconvenient but I pointed out to him that it probably cut down on the noise considerably. It was noisy in that lobby!!

The room was huge compared to our last two hotels, POFQ and especially POP. I loved having the space, especially since we were parking the stroller. The rooms were so bright and fresh-looking. We had a corner room so we had two windows.

We had a parking lot view...right off the drop-off point where you enter the lobby. That is not so much a problem for us. We do not stand on the balcony staring at the view so much that we're willing to pay more for a prettier view. However, had we even wanted a view, it would have been hard-going for us to see very much since we had one of the dreaded Juliet balconies.

I had heard about these balconies but I am an eternal optimist and believe often people tend to exaggerate a bit on the negative side. But this thing was teensy. Seriously, it was MAYBE a foot to a foot and a half deep and about 4 feet wide. It was funny. A big balcony would have been nice, but having this did not hinder our vacation at all.

There was plenty of open floor space and the beds were probably the most comfy hotel beds I've ever slept in. It got plenty cold in there, which is great because that never seems to happen in hotel rooms for me. I need to have it freezing at night. There was also a ceiling fan which was lovely.

The bathroom was nice, but the toilet/shower room was funny. If someone was sitting on the toilet, you would basically have to knock them off to get the door open. There are literally milimeters between the door and toilet.

There was also plenty of storage space. We were able to fit all of our clothes/souvenirs in the drawers and closets without a problem.

Ok, that's it for this installment. Stay tuned for Day 1, part 2. Did we make it Epcot for opening? How did we like HDD??

Tip: It is worth spending the extra money on spray sunscreen. You save so much time and don't have to deal with children (and husbands) complaining about the stickiness. Believe me, I know. I ran out of the spray stuff on Day 3 and had to resort to my back-up lotion. I ended up buying more spray sunscreen at the gift shop. Bring extra from home!!

As soon as we got done checking in, we loaded Wee into his stroller, grabbed our park bags and headed off. We went through the lobby and out the back and hung a left at the lake and headed to the international gateway.

I knew that BC was close to the International Gateway but I hadn't realized it was THAT close. This was probably one of our absolute favorite features of the Beach Club. You pretty much walk up a hill and back down it on the other side and there you are. Epcot opened at 9 and we had actually made it to the IG at about 8:45 a.m. There were about 5 other families waiting as well. While we waited in line, I gave both of the kids their disposable cameras I had bought for the trip to put in their park bags. They let us in to start walking to Future World at about ten minutes later and we made it to Future World in time to see 1/2 of the opening show. This was our first time to catch any part of an opening show. We were SO on schedule this time!!

Of course, we headed straight for Soarin'. There was a 20 minute wait. My kids, were a little nervous about riding it and were both a little less enthusiastic than I thought they'd be :

040.jpg

We showed the attendants our baby and they gave us Rider Switch passes so DH could ride later. DH waited outside with Wee while the Bigs and I got in line. About halfway through the line, I had an epiphany...I called DH to run and get us some FPs for Test Track.

We finally got on for Soarin' and we got to ride in the top row. This was our first time to ever ride in the top row and let me tell you, it is SO much easier to suspend disbelief if you don't have other people's tennis shoes dangling above you. I love this ride no matter what, but I had never enjoyed it THIS much except the first time I ever rode it.

We unboarded the ride ( I almost called it "disboarded") and headed to meet DH so we could get on TT. But there was a very annoying hiccup in our plan. DD7 had neglected to get her bag out of our glider. We noticed about halfway through the exit hall. We immediately went to the attendants at the front of the ride and asked what to do. She said since we had just lost it to go back in the same way we came and when the ride was unloading again we could walk in through the exit and ask a CM if we could check our seat.

Well let me tell you, it is very easy to go from the ride to the exit, but going in the opposite direction, we found that those halls are quite a maze!! We ended up in the wrong theater at first, after waiting for an entire ride sequence. So we had to go back through the exit and find the other theater. After waiting through another ride sequence, we managed to get in the theater and secure DD's park bag.

After we finally got out, I called DH to see where he was and he had stopped at the Character Spot with Wee. He was almost at the front of the line...this annoyed me for two reasons: 1) This was not part of my plan 2) He was seriously going to take Wee to see Mickey for the first time this trip without me there?? Seriously??

So we caught up with him and he wouldn't leave the line. He MADE me skip line. I am Ms. Rule-Follower McGee and it went against everything I believe in to duck under those queues to catch up with him and Wee in front of all those people but I couldn't live with myself as a mother if I missed Wee's chance at meeting Mickey. We obsessed over the Mouse and the Fab Five for weeks before this trip so I could be sure Wee got as much out of the characters as possible.

I'm glad I did it even though DH now knows that this is a big no-no! Here are some pics from meeting them:

Up next: Mine, mine, mine and watching our lunch in production

Tip: Invest in some disposable cameras for your kids for the trip. It gives them something to do during attractions they might find boring and it also helps them be aware of those wonderful little Disney details. And it gives them something to look forward to after the trip. We had such a blast waiting for our prints to come in and then seeing Disney from the Bigs' point of view.

Thank you for reading my TR, TXDisney! I'm glad you're enjoying it. I am so jealous of your luxurious Disney vacation in only eight days@

I'm in! Your kids are soooo cute! And your DS6 reminds me of my Thing3 (my 6 year old sister). Can't wait to read more! popcorn::

Thank you ZFamily! I am rather fond of them myself. Thanks for joining us.

I should be posting the rest of Day1 today.

I am back! Great TR. Beautiful family!

Guess what? we were at Epcot on May, 18th also! Except is was the very last day of our trip. :(

Cannot wait to read more!
