Best Interior Paint (One Coat?)

We just moved into a new house, and all the walls are a beautiful shade of builders white. ;) We want to start painting some of the rooms, so I'm looking for some advice on paint type. Since we're painting over white basically, I'm assuming we won't need to prime (?), but is there any paint out there that will do the trick in one coat? None of the colors are dark, but the dining room is going to be a medium blue color, and if we can do it in one coat, that would be great.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

I think my friends used Behr that contained primer/paint together to repaint the blood red room in their new house to a much lighter nuetral color. She only had to go over a couple spots twice. We used Lowe's brand on our white walls and only did one coat. I guess it depends on the color you use. Good luck!

Thank you both for the quick replies! :)

People really seem to like Behr. Even if I don't need to prime, should I still look into the the Behr Paint + Primer since it says one-coat application? Or is there a "regular" Behr I could get that might do the trick?

I know there are new paints out there that say "one coat" now.

The thing is that if you are painting a darker color over white you really need a dark primer to bring out the color of the dark paint. It just looks better, more professional.

Plus when the dark paint gets scuffed up a bit then you don't see white paint blaring from underneath it.

It is not necessary UNLESS you are doing a red or burgundy. Always use a primer for those colors. It will take you too many coats to get to the color palette of the dark red hue.

It does depend on the color you are painting.

I always do two coats. I think you get a richer color when you do two coats.

I just painted our master bedroom in Benjamin Moore's Aura paint (low odor paint). I love the color, Malton. The application is a little different than other paints. The last time I painted our bedroom was in 2003. I used BM paint and the walls still looked as great as the day I painted them.. There was no fading in the paint at all; which is something that I've noticed in Behr and Lowe's paints.

Painting is a pain in the rear, but I would definitely do two coats of paint. :thumbsup2

If you are going to paint, do it right. 2 coats is a must even for "one coat" paint which if you read the directions will tell you to use a tinted primer for best results.

I really like Benjamin Moore Aura paint as well. It goes on really nicely and covers well. I still always use two coats. I like the depth of colour.

Yes, look into Behr....

Do NOT get the paint from Lowe's.

We've had good luck with Lowe's (Valspar) Signature paint. We also used the regular Valspar and it was fine, but the Signature covered great in one coat.

I agree. When I was talking to the guy at my local BM store, he said that I would probably only need to do one coat. I told him I was doing two. He didn't care, it's more $ for him. The first coat looked fine, but the second coat truly brought out the richness of the color. :thumbsup2

We have recently done several rooms in our house. We used Behr paint for all of it. However, we primed everything and used two coats of the Behr paint. It gives a much better finished look. We were very happy with the results.

I agree with the Benjamin Moore.

I love Lowe's Valspar paint. I recently painted over my purple (think dark eggplant purple, what were they thinking!?) with a beach house blue using Valspar, it did a great job!
