I recently received an Xbox 360 as a gift. I haven't played video games for about fifteen years. Both the games, and I, have changed a lot. :)

I thought about reviving one of the Xbox 360 threads from a year or two ago, but my interest is pretty specific and different from the general discussions in those other threads. I'm looking specifically to learn how to get the most out of this fantastic device, from people who, like me, are simply not into any kind of "first-person shooter"-type games which seem to dominate the "best game" lists.

The last three video games I played (all those years ago) indicate the kind of video games I'm looking for: The 7th Guest, The 11th Hour and Phantasmagoria. I guess these are considered "psychological/puzzle" games and are "interactive movies". Are they still making games like that? And if so are any games that really shine on the Xbox 360? ... i.e., games that really couldn't be played on a computer - games that need a seventh-generation video game system, connected to a big screen?

i dont believe they make games like this any more. which is a shame.

however, i will suggest two VERY good puzzle games to check out - Braid and Limbo. both have free demo's to check out. i'm a fan of limbo, very dark and very simple to play, however the puzzle aspect really gives you something to scratch your head.

'Heavy Rain' is the perfect evolution of the interactive movie, but unfortunatley that's a PS3 exclusive.

I agree Braid and Limbo are both very good. They are both side-scrolling puzzlers. Limbo reminds me a lot of the old side scroller 'Out of this World' from years ago. They do require some Mario style platforming skill though

If you're OK with learning some action controls, you should really check out 'Bioshock' and 'Alan Wake'. Bioshock is an FPS, but it plays a lot more like an old school adventure game with it's strong story and how immersive it is. It's considered one of the greatest games ever for a reason.

Alan Wake is a 3rd persion action game, but again, it's much more story focused and reminds me a lot of the older horror adventure games.

If you decide to check out and enjoy Bioshock or Alan Wake, then 'Dead Space' is another creepy 3rd person action game that feels like playing an interactive space horror flick.

Thanks for the recommendations! Braid and Limbo both sound interesting. I'm going to check out the previews on them.

Bioshock sounds like it may exceed my patience for having to learn how to master the controller. :) Alan Wake is on-order, part of the gift, itself, so we'll definitely see how that works for us.

That's my favorite game - absolutely love it. The story is great, and the graphics are pretty awesome, too. It's pretty scary - I play it in the dark and have scared myself pretty bad a few times.

My other favorite is Dante's Inferno, which is essentially the video game version of Dante Alighieri's poem. The graphics are beautiful.

DF is a big fan of Bioshock and Bioshock 2, but I could never really get into them completely. To be fair, the graphics are amazing and the storyline is pretty creepy.. part of the problem is I haven't given them enough time, I think. I've been too busy with Dead Space and Dante's Inferno. :thumbsup2

Here are some trailers for Dead Space and Dante's Inferno, if you're interested:

and Bioshock 2 for good measure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8lngIFXRi4 The trailer for this one is really great I think, and gives you a feel of the "movie" aspect to it.

while these are all awesome games, i think the OP needs something a little simpler before jumping into the deep end :)

So Avatar - way too hard. :) She also tried to play Alan Wake, and it was too hard for her as well, but I was able to make it to the end of Episode 1 with her (happy to be) watching. I hope it doesn't get harder! But surely neither of those games are within her patience realm. She's working with MS on a gamertag problem, so we haven't tried either of the recommended Xbox Arcade games.
