What in your opinion is the best and closest hotel to Universal that is not on site? considering double tree for a quick 3 night stay, would also like to know if any hotels within walking distance have a shuttle from and to the airport?

The Doubletree is close as well as Hyatt Place Universal and Holiday Inn Maingate to Universal and I have stayed at the doubletree and its a nice hotel but nothing facy but good hotel and I don't know if any of them have shuttles to and from the airport
I know the doubletree doesn't but we are using mears for our shuttle to and from the airport and its like $30 round trip per person
Hope this helps :thumbsup2

I've stayed at both the Hyatt Place and the Doubletree. If I had to pick one of the two, I'd go with the Hyatt b/c they had a complimentary breakfast - yogurt, bagels, cereal, juice, fruit, coffee - and the rooms seemed bigger. Both were an easy walk to/from the parks and City Walk (probably no more than a mile, if that) but I am pretty sure they each had shuttles if you don't want to walk.

we got a really good deal on priceline.... but I wasn't sure if its close enough to walk. Anyone stay there?

We are going to stay there in about 15 days and its right across from the doubletree and is about a 10 to 15 min walk and they also have a shuttle to the parks but as far as how the hotel is I don't know but will find out soon :thumbsup2

Doubletree charges for parking. Hyatt Place doesn't.

Looking at the reviews of Holiday Inn on Trip Advisor, several people comment that they walked to US/IOA from this hotel. Is it REALLY safe to walk from any of the off-site hotels? You wouldn't have to cross a highway or anything to get there?

I think it is safe and I have walked it myself and even with my sons when they were 9 and 14 and you do have to cross kirkman and it is a very busy road but I found the crossing lights gives you plenty of time to cross :thumbsup2
