I would suggest you only stay at the Nick resort if you intend to do all the stuff there, not merely as a place to crash for a few hours before going to legoland.
We just went through the same situation. It seemed like any hotel that was close to Legoland was not so great and had nothing to do around it. They were also all about 15-20 minutes away. We decided to go a little farther and we are staying tomorrow night at the Dolphin. We got a pretty good rate - $165 - and will be able to enjoy a little Disney fun while we wander around the boardwalk that night. It is about 45 minutes away, but I think the extra drive is worth it to make this one day trip more of a mini vacation.
I have no idea how nice the hotel is but it might be worth researching the Best Western Park View hotel in Winter Haven. It's at 5651 Cypress Gardens Boulevard and less than a mile from the Legoland parking lot.
We're going just after Memorial Day and are looking at the Liki Tiki Village. It's on the SW side of WDW close to HWY 27. It looks like it would be good for our kiddos (9 & 2)
