My boys have decided they both want the PS3. I guess there are two different consoles one that plays PS2 games too. Definitely want the console that plays PS 2 games. This will be there big gift for Christmas!
Has anyone seen or heard of any deals on these?
Thanks!

As far as I know you cannot buy a console anymore that plays the PS 2 games. It was the very first PS3 that did that, but the newer ones no longer do. Too bad, that is what is keeping us from buying a PS3.

Yep, this is very true. The newest models (which came out in September) have either a 120GB or a 250GB hard drive. I think they're smaller and are supposed to be a tad bit more energy efficient, but won't play PS2 games.

Oh, and I should add I haven't seen any good deals on them yet. My SIL wants to get one for my brother and nephew for Chirstmas, so we've both been on the lookout for a couple of weeks now. Since the newest models just came out, I don't know if there will be any great deals, but maybe some attractive bundles.

Thanks! We definitely want the older model that plays PS 2 games. Hopefully there will be some deals out there before Christmas!!

I believe what is being stated is that you will have to buy one used, ie Gamestop because the newer models being sold by retail outlets now will not play PS2 games.

So unless gamestop does a deal on used systems.....which they did do I beleive last season.

I doubt there will be any real price deals on the new PS3 this shopping season. They JUST reduced the price for the "basic" model to $299. Now, they may have deals where they bundle games with the system for the same price... but I would be really shocked if they did anything with the price.

I don't want the latest model since we want to be able to use Ps2 games on it. So I guess I'm looking for the older model. Only want to buy new too. Hopefully I'll find one!

This is the one I have. It's the last model that was backward compatible. Unfortunately, there are none left in any actual stores since it's been well over a year since they were sold. Your only chance to find one will be to find one online. Because they are backward compatible, you will find that they are significantly more expensive than the newer models. Unless it is important to you that you only have 1 console that plays PS2 and PS3 games, you might want to consider buying both a PS2 and a new PS3 - buying the two new consoles will probably actually cost less than buying one backward compatible PS3.

We already have a PS2 but just talked to my DH and I think we'll just go ahead and purchase the newest PS3 model. I just want to make sure all the Rock Band equipment my son has will work on the new PS3 model. There's quite a bit of investment in all the instruments.

The only "deal" I have found is to use Amazon.com with free super saver shipping. Since they don't charge sales tax (at least to PA) it works out cheaper than going to the store.

You may find one leftover somewhere that still plays the PS2 games, but they stppoed making them. Good Luck!

Last year Walmart gave a $100 gift card when buying a PS3 on one of their Saturday sales. This past week they did an Xbox. I'm hoping they do the PS3 deal again.

We're in the same boat, DS wants the PS3. From what we can figure out, the drums and microphone should work with the PS3, but the guitars will not.

We already have both Rock band and Guitar hero drums and 3 guitars. So I think we can get away with just one new guitar.

I went to Walmart yesterday and spoke to an employee in the electronic section. He told me none of the Rock Band instruments we have will play on the new PS3.
Are you sure yours will work? I was questioning whether or not he really new what he was talking about. He even checked an adapter and said no. I told the boys that we will not be getting any RockBand for the new PS3. If they want to play RockBand they will have to play it on the PS2.

Thanks for the heads up that you cannot play PS2 games on the PS3... saved me some money and a headache. We like the PS2, have a bunch of games and it seems silly to have both sitting out. (Plus the Wii)

Looks like Santa wont be doing the video game route this year!

We just bought the Rock Band drum set 2 months ago (his Guitar hero drums were worn out) It says on the box for PS2 and PS3, it was a separate set of drums, not the band kit.

We were also at the mall last night talking to a geek (that's what he called himself) working in the video store. He said they should work because they have a USB connector.

DS says he will play all old stuff on the PS2 but wants the PS3 going forward. But I really don't want to spend another fortune on new instruments!

You can use the Ps2 instruments with the PS3 if you purchase a special USB connector. I forget where I got mine, (some website last year.) but it wasn't expensive and it works great.
