Best Check-In date for the best room available?

We arrived about 2 weeks ago at the Boardwalk, appx 10am. Our room request was upper floor and see thru balcony for our Boardwalk view. The CM said our room was not ready, but they had 2 rooms that were ready that did not meet our requests, (solid bottom balcony, stand to see out) were we interested? We decided to wait for our request and got what we wanted. My opinion is if you arrive earlier in the day there might be choices available, but if you check in later in the evening not so much. When we used to live on the west coast, we would fly in late evening and stay cheap for the first night.

I think we will do what ever day is the best plane rate
Stay off site for the first night - get a good nights sleep
The go to the WDW resort in the AM
Drop off bags and go to a theme park
We could go back to the resort in the early evening and unpack into our assigned room.

You can do online check in 60 days before your arrival, and there's a good chance that you'll never even have to visit the front desk to check in. You can drop your bags at Bell Services if you want, then go straight to the park, or keep your bags in your car if you have one and go straight to the park, then when you are finished, straight to your room.

Rooms are assigned days ahead of time. Showing up in person at the front desk won't make a difference.
