Best camera for under $500?

I'd like to buy my SO a new camera. I can't afford spending more than $500.

Which camera/model would you recommend? I don't know much about cameras, but I would like to get him one that will take quality outdoor photos and one that is conducive to travel with to WDW or elsewhere.

Some of the Canon Powershot cameras are great quality and most are under $500.

First decide if a pocket size is desired or something medium size.

For $500 you can get a nice camera in either variety.

Nikon P80!!! Seriously. It's about $400 and takes the best pictures. My sister in law likes it better than her $800 camera. If you want to see pictures I took of some butterflies and stuff just PM me.

ETA: Oh! I forgot that the pics in my signature were taken with my Nikon. It's great with portraits.

I just bought the Canon PowerShot SX10IS at Best Buy for $345.00 it has a 20x zoom lens. I had been using the Sony Cyber shots which are smaller (you can actually slip them in a pocket0 But I wanted something with a bigger zoom but one that I didn't have to tote extra lenses for. Although the Canon is bigger it's not so big that it is a PITA to carry around. So far I have been very happy with it.
