Our first night at WDW is my husband's birthday. He absolutely loves ribs. I would like to find out which restaurant would be good for that night. Any suggestions? It needs to be fairly kid friendly for several 7 year olds!
Thanks!
I consider my self a rib connissouer and have added many pounds to my frame over the years in pursuit of great BBQ. I'm just geeky like that... the way some people are with wine. I used to volunteer for trips to KC just to go to some of my favorites in that city (The Smoked Prime Rib at Jack Stack is AMAZING!) Grew up going to Texas and Memphis a lot, and still go now. I've been known to take 100 mile detours to try a highly recommended hole in the wall BBQ place (Anyone going to Memphis try the BBQ Spaghetti at Interstate BBQ).
Any ribs at Disney are going to be mediocre at best... The best I've found there are Flame Tree, which would be slightly above mediocre in a place like Memphis, Texas or KC, but are probably the best at Disney. Since you wanted TS though, that doesn't fit the bill.
Rainforest has a decent glazed, but they do not smoke (instead parboiling which is blasphemy to any Rib conniseur) so you are basically eating flavorless meat. Plus, if you have never been to Rainforest... the kids love, many adults, like myself, hate it (Some do love it though)... too noisy, over priced, etc. If he hates that environment, I wouldn't subject him to it on his birthday.
Whispering Canyon and hoop de doo both had a smoky flavor, but mediocre sauce. Not fall off the bone in the times I have gone (The way properly smoked ribs or evil parboiled ribs are done), meaning they are not smoked long enough (its possible they aren't smoked at all and instead use a liquid smoke, I'm not sure. They do not appear to be parboiled)
House of Blues ventures off the Disney path slightly, but after Flame Tree are probably the second best at Disney in my opinion. The sauce is a bit pedestrian, but hey... its a national chain restaurant, its not the Rendevous. And the Rosemary Cornbread is amazing.
NOW if you have a car, there are some good places in Orlando... Its been a little while since I ventured off property for Ribs (2-3 years), so verify some of these are still open.
Brothers and Sisters BBQ in Winter Garden - Was picked as the best Rib Joint by Sentinel in 2006.
Uncle Jone's BBQ (which reminds me of a real old school soul food place)
BlackWater's - They were a top 5 finisher at Memphis in May in 2007 I believe... I can't remember the year, but that's what made me go.
Cecil's Texas Style BBQ
THese are some of the best places in Orlando. So if you have a car, go to one of these...
If not, I'd pick HOB or Hoop de doo... HOB has better ribs, but you get a good show at Hoop de doo. Just don't go into any of the places expecting the best ribs you ever had.
