best baking / cookbook

hi there.
I am running out tonight to pick up a cookbook for baking for a friend..
that is what she requested for xmas...
can someone recommend a great book for baking...
no fancy baking , just everyday baking of cookies/muffins, etc..
(like me , she is not a baker !)

I really like any of the COmpanys coming cookobooks or the Gooseberry Patch books. I have a ton of cookbooks and those are the ones I reach for the most!

Better Homes and Gardens New Baking Book. I use mine all the time. it has simple basic stuff and more fancy things as well.

I vote for the King Arthur Flour's Baking Companion. It covers everything from basic muffins, quickbreads, cakes to sourdough starters and yeast breads. I use mine all the time.

not just baking but I use the Good Housekeeping cookbook. They have pictures of all the recipes.

A good basic cookbook that has a little bit of everything is the Joy of Cooking. It is pretty popular and has been around a long time, but if your friend doesn't have it, it makes a good addition to her kitchen. It is very thorough explaining techniques and such and has really good basic and more involved recipes together. I also second the Good Housekeeping one. The pictures are a big help in seeing just what you creating.

I love my cake mix doctor cookbook. It takes regular every day cake mixes and helps jazz them up. Also you can't go wrong with Paula Dean's cookbooks though she uses alot of butter and other fats.
