...... is this something new? My DD13 has a friend the same age that just got her belly button pierced. Is it just me, or does this seem a little young? Maybe I'm just out of the loop

DD had a player on her Soccer team maybe 14 . I just couldn't beleive it.

Then at Six Flags it seemed like many of the young ones had them done and most were smoking as well.

I looked at DD and just gave her the I don't think so.

It's not that new been around for about 10 years now although most were older 15 to 16 was the youngest ages up until about 5 years ago. Body piercings are popular with the teen crowd. Belly button piercings is (in my opinon) more acceptable than the others. A tounge ring is one I don't care for at all.

I imagine a minor would have to have parent's permission to have it done. And yes... it's trashy.

Honestly, I don't like all this body piercing. But, to each his own. If it makes people happy, good for them.

But, I think 13 is waaaay too young.

my 15 year old wants to get one. I hate the idea. fortunately, she loves cherleading more than belly piercings....she's not allowed ot wesr a belly ring during practice, and lately she's been doing a tumbling class for cheerleading, so she can't get it done.

Not new at all... it's been going on since I entered my teens (I'm 22 now)... so at least 10 years ago.

I actually have a nice rhinestone in mine, and keep it clean. I personally don't see a problem with at all if it's at least something nice. It's those metal studs that I think look trashy.

My DD was 16 when she has it done. And yes she needed a parent permission. I think any younger would be too young.

I believe (and could be wrong) that the belly piercing will close up if you take the stud out. I don't think it is a great idea at all, and at the age of the girl in question, the parent can just say no as they like.

HOWEVER, here is my PSA against piercing: I had multiple piercings in my ears (8 in the left, three in the right) in high school-college, but ended up having to take them all out because of a reaction I developed to metals. Even now, I cannot wear anything in my ears, even gold, and all necklaces, bracelets, etc. have to be 14K gold or sterling silver, or I grow a rash across my skin, where-ever the metal has touched. My ear piercings were infected sometimes, but a septic ear is easier to treat than a septic tummy ring. IF you get pierced, make sure it is by a liscensed place, and follow the instructions for aftercare.

One thing I always say: the piercings I had were temporary--some things, like tatoos, or "body modifications," are forever!

I think they make girls look cheap & trashy. I am so relieved my daughter does not like them.

I'm in college now, but all through high school, it was considered the "cool" thing to have your belly button pierced. Luckily for me and my friends, we didn't care, and laughed when they all realized how much they hurt when you just get it done and then have time sit-ups for a grade in gym :rotfl2: More than half the girls had to take imcompletes for it because they refused to take them out, ever.
I know around here, you have to be 18 to get ANY piercings without consent at any respectable place. But with parental permission, you can get some things done younger. However, in this area, there is a HUGE group of kids who are piercing themselves with safety pins and sewing needles. :sad2:

My DD19 pierced hers last year. Her father and I were not happy :sad2: However, she can take it out and the hole would close up if she decides she doesn't like it later in life. And she does have a nice CZ type stone in it and we have gotten kind of used to it. She works hard in college, is a sweet loving girl who stays out of trouble and if this is the worst thing we have to deal with, I cannot complain.

BTW, many of her friends had them in high school, and I was surprised at that. She also only has one hole in each ear, thank goodness, I do not like all those earring holes, either.

I had gotten my belly button pierced in college at age 18 or 19. It's gone now that I have kids and I grew up. But 13 is ridiculous..... everything is just happenenig at such an earlier age these days. I would have never desired a belly button ring at age 13. What is going on????? :confused3

I hate them and always have since they've been "in vogue" (I'm 23). I have a few friends who have/had them- one girl got it pierced twice after losing one the first time. She's got a scar now and (I'm sorry, I love her to death) it looks GROSS.

Another best friend of mine currently has one ("nice rhinestone" whatever that means) and it still looks bad.

I've seen gorgeous women with wonderful stomachs that just ruin them with a belly button piercing. I honestly think it makes most people look fatter.

TRASHY.

(and again I have a few friends with them- two of my best friends- so this isn't in offense to those who have them... I just hate them)

My neighbor in her late 30s had it done and I about freaked out. I guess she thought I would think it was cool. Not what I was thinking. I will never sign for my girls to get this done.

My cousin just let her daughter get her belly button pierced. She'll be 15 next month. Hey to each their own. I certainly don't think it looks trashy,,, if my stomach was still flat, I'd be running to get my bellybutton pierced.
