i'm going to a local beauty school to have my hair 'japanese' straightened (again) and instead of it costing $500-$700 they are doing it for free!!!

question is.... do i tip them?? i'm more then happy to, especially considering the services they are giving me free, but i'm not sure if it is appropriate and how much i should give.

I would tip them the normal 15-20% of what the service would have cost you. It sounds fabulous - I'd love to do that. Have fun.:)

I would, yes.. As for how much, I'm not too sure.. On services that would normally cost $500 - $700 I can only say in my opinion.. $50 - $75.. I don't really know, sorry.. But Yes, I'd tip..

I dont think they can take tips. We couldn't when I was in beauty school. Maybe bring some treats.snacks for the girls.

You can call ahead and ask the teacher.

Yes, you do. My mother and sister went back to beauty school(there goes the Grease song) and when they were finally doing the hands on work, they were tipped. Since they're giving the service for free, it's a nice touch.

Definitely tip them. When my DD was in Cosmetology school she would come home beaming when she got a tip for a job well done.

If they do a good job, I would absolutely tip the appropriate amount...I think somone mentioned at least $50? These are students, learning a craft...I'm sure whoever does your hair would really appreciate the money. (Student loans can be a pain to repay, y'know?)

Also, again, if you are satisfied with the results...RECOMMEND the school to everyone you know. Ask them if they have a school business card, make sure you get the name of the person who does this procedure on your hair. Make sure you tell the instructor what a great job the student does on your hair.

Btw...what *is* "Japanese straightening"?

agnes!

I would definitely tip if they are allowed... let us know how it turns out!!! I've been thinking of getting this done but I'm really hesitant about the touchup treatments. I've been using a flat iron for over 10 years and would love to take a break :headache:

I go to the Paul Mitchell beauty school Pulse, while their services aren't free, they are deeply discounted. I always tip.

japanese straightening is just about the most awesome invention ever! i have very thick and curly hair, it gets very frizzy if i leave it curly. i have the process done 1-1/2 years ago and now my hair is straight on the bottom and curly on top! the weight of my hair does keep the top a bit less curly, almost wavy.

when the straightened part of my hair dries it is completely smooth and straight, like an asian persons hair. i have not used a straight iron since i had it done, and i rarely ever use a dryer.

the process takes about 5 hours, with several steps, including about 2-3 hours of just flat ironing your hair!

it's very harsh for your hair, and it's not recommended for overly processed hair either. but i    it!

and thanks for the feedback! i'll probably have 3-4 people work on my hair so i'll just bring about $150 worth of ten dollar bills and distribute them to whoever works on me.

kim, if that is you in the siggy pic and you like your current hair style (which i think is adorable!) then this type of straightening may not be for you. once done your hair will be very flat to your head and will not hold a curl at all.

That was me about 3 years ago... my hair is very, very curly (spiral) and I flat iron it every day with a professional flat iron. I wear it straight, shoulder length. That style was a blow out and then curled... professionally for a wedding. I could never do that myself

I had a consultation years ago for the straightening but it was soooo expensive and I have my hair routine down to 20 minutes in the morning. I work at a spa now and could get it done for pretty much nothing but I'm afraid of overprocessing my hair :headache: .

at the time i had mine done i had highlights under darkened hair. it did strip the dye from my hair, but then everyone raved about my pretty color! it did damage my hair but not as bad as blowdrying and hot ironing daily did. in fact this is the first time in my life that the bottom of my hair is thick all the way to the tips.
