My DH has decided he is interested in picking up archery and I wanted to get him a beginner bow & arrow set for Xmas (beginner in case he decides he doesn't want to do it after he has a taste for it). Does anyone have any recommendations for brands or models? Hoping to spend less than $100.

He would use it for target practice, not for actual hunting, if that makes a difference.

Thanks oodles!!!!

If there is an archery range near your home you could buy him a certificate for time there. Then he could use different models and practice with them and see which one feels best to him. I decided to get an upright base for my DH a few years ago and went ahead and rented him one first with the option to buy. The rental price came right off the purchase price and it turned out that he loved the sound of the one I picked out.

My son got one last Christmas, but I have no idea of the brand or cost. Lot of help I am! But, I know that Sportsmans Warehouse and Dicks Sporting goods carries them.
And, we have an archery range here that sels them as well, if you have one near you they can help steer you in the right direction.

We got a Jr Size set for DS at Cabelas (www.cabelas.com) It was perfect and inexpensive (I am sure less than $40 - maybe even $30)

The problem was a target. I didn't think of that til the last minute. I mean, you need something to shoot at! We were able to get 2 bales of straw from a farmer and he would just pin paper targets on that. It was perfect.

It's a nice, inexpensive gift, even if he doesn't pursue it.

Thanks!
I checked on-line and didn't see any archery ranges that were too close by, but there is one that is nto too far and I will call in the next few days and see how they are run - if you can try out different bows and such there.

Before you buy one, check with your city ordinances, I know in several town where we have lived, using a bow and arrow even just for target practice is against the law within city limits. I know our neighbors in our old town got a fine for doing that. I didn't report them but they had set up their targets FACING our yard with a 10 and 8 year old boy shooting them, um, no, move them please! They moved them to the back of their yard and someone saw them there.

Beginner sets all seem to be geared towards children. Unless your husband is dimunitive in size, they will not work for him.
