ok, I was in the subway tonight, and it was very crowded, so I heard rather than saw what happened.
from one end of the car, a young woman began her "begging spiel" -- you know, "I'm homeless and hungry and can anyone help me out?"
a few minutes later, at the other end of the car, was the homeless advocate -- the guy who comes onto the subway with sandwiches, asks if anyone is hungry, and asks the rest of us for donations.
remarkably, as soon as he began his spiel, the woman became silent.
and somehow I doubt is was because she was eating one of his sandwiches.
grrrr.....
