Before I waste $5 on fake ice cream......

We buy toffuti it is soy based and tastes like a can of frosting at least the vanilla one does. Also I think the sorbet could be a good choice. Whole food has some dairy free whip cream that we have not tried yet but I was excited to see we had an option for it.:wizard:

Here's a third vote for coconut ice cream. I can't have rice, soy, or almond due to other allergies. The Mint Chocolate tastes almost identical to the regular kind.

Vote #4 for So Delicious Coconut ice cream!!! DS has life threatening food allergies to soy and dairy, so he has only eaten the coconut ice cream. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the chocolate (and I am not really a sweets person--give me some meat and potatoes anyday;)). They even have coconut ice cream sandwiches that are to die for!:faint: Because they are speciality items, they do cost more, but are delicious. If you like a hint of coconut, you won't be disappointed. I have never seen the mint chocolate--but it sounds amazing!

They run dedicated lines and have strict allergy testing to avoid cross contamination also. I love them!

My kids and I can't have dairy (it's the protein, not the lactose to which we're allergic so lactaid won't help). We don't like the rice alternatives. We can have soy and coconut. My 14yo really likes the coconut milk ice cream by So Delicious. My 11yo likes that and Toffuti (the same stuff they sell at WDW; it tastes like WDW to us LOL). I like Toffuti and soy So Delicious. I really don't like the taste of coconuts and I do find I can taste a small amount of coconut in the ice cream, though I tend to buy simple flavours. Something strong like mint probably would be better.

Most grocery stores in my area that have a frozen section of health food goods carry all of these brands. Toffuti is the cheapest though the large soy So Delious aren't much different in price.

I'm also lactose intolerant. I find that taking 2 or 3 lactaid pills will usually work for me, but I keep up with my tolerance by eating yogurt a few times a week.

Something that I've always been safe with is getting sorbet. Kroger has a mango one that's yummo!!!

All the other "fake" ice creams taste just that to me - fake. I stick with the sorbet.

i'm vegan, so i eat fake ice cream by choice. coconut based ice creams are going to have the richest flavor. i'm not too fond of rice based ice creams, and soy based are good if you get a stronger flavor like mocha. almond based are very good, but hard to find.

*if you have a trader joe's near you, they have cherry chocolate chip (larger container and cheaper). i like it a lot.

*most wal*marts have a small offering of non dairy ice cream (so delicious brand at my nearest one) and the price is a lot better than the grocery store. (plus check coupons.com for a $.55 coupon off any so delicious dairy free product)

I had not been to coupons.com in quite a while. Got a coupon for Lactaid product PLUS So delicious products!! Thanks for the tip!! I'm trying both!!!

Another vote for So Delicious. We just recently found out dd is allergic to dairy. We've tried a couple of their ice creams and they are really yummy.

I second this.

Not a fan of the soy. The rice is so so. The coconut it very good, every flavor I've tried.

Agreed. I love the So Delicious ice cream - especially the vanilla.

My daughter outgrew her dairy allergy, but when she was dairy-free, we had So Delicious, Rice Dream and Almond Dream ice cream and I liked them all. I actually liked the Almond Dream so much that I'd buy it in lieu of regular ice cream if it weren't so expensive. The Almond Dream Bites are good too.

I was surprised to find mint chocolate too. It was my favorite flavour before my allergies got bad enough that I had to go completely dairy free. There's nothing better then chewing up chocolate chunks and minty ice cream on a hot day. :goodvibes The coconut isn't even noticable. I buy it at Whole Foods; not sure if they all carry the same flavours but it doesn't hurt to ask if you don't see it.

Breyers lactose free vanilla is really good. There have been 3 in our family who are lactose intollerant and we all eat it.

I agree with this one, my daughter is lactose intolerant and really liked this one, she said she didn't really notice a difference from their regular vanilla ice cream.

How about just taking a lactaid pill and then eating whatever flavor/brand you like?

I use my lactose pills for times like that too. 3 extra strength pills and I can have a normal size bowl of icecream with no pain or other symptoms
