Bedwetting ,, what happens to the mattress's

A friend who worked in the hotel industry told me that the mattresses can be cleaned with an enzyme-based cleaner that effectively eats any organic residue. It's pretty much the same thing as a high-quality pet stain and odor remover. They completely soak the wet spot and if they have time they'll let it then air-dry, if not they flip the mattress.

Disney's milage may vary.

Although this thread has been informative, I am so grossed out right now. I have a son that wets the bed :guilty: In the past we have used pull-ups, but DS who is 5 now refuses to use them. I really can't blame him. When travelling we bring our own mattress protectors. We use a twin on a queen bed and put it in the middle. We've never had a problem. We always check it in the morning to see if it needs adjusting. I think after reading this thread, DH and I will bring one for us. Hotel beds and rooms usually gross me out to begin with.

I haven't read all the replies, but I do have a little experience in this area. When DS had been potty trained without a single accident for well over a year--almost 2, he was just so exhausted, he wet the bed instead of waking up. This was also his only accident ever.

It was in the morning, and we called down to mousekeeping. They thanked us profusely for letting them know, and asked if we'd like the room made up immediately or with regular service (4 hour wait). We had stripped the bed for them. They came in with all new bedding (sheets, mattress pad, bedspread), and prior to doing anything cleaned the mattress--first with water and then with special cleaners just for that situation. They also used what equates to a heavy duty blow dryer before making the bed. They also added a mattress protector and told us that we could request one in advance if ever we needed it.

They told us it actually happens very regularly; they are just thrilled when people let them know in advance, so the cleaning doesn't get skipped nor does the regular service slow down.

I agree with hmp2z, that is really disgusting and there is no excuse not immediately move them somewhere even another resort if they had to. I would not stay in a room they left a pissy mattress in. I would be pissed :teeth: and move to another hotel. I can't believe there wasn't someone who could help them out.

Exactly, accidents can happen to anyone regardless of age. Even adults can get very suddenly ill.

This is a good reminder, all the Disney resorts do have mattress protectors available upon request. Even if anyone in one's family has a very low chance of having an accident, anyone who would feel better with one can always request one. :)

I've never understood why ALL hotels do not protect their mattresses with vinyl covers.

I agree ,,,, wonder why disney just doesn't do that ,, sure
would be alot easier than to just keep flipping them over and
over everytime they get wet on.

I know I'd be likely to remove it . . . I can't sleep with something crinkling in my ear all night.

What's REALLY icky is how many people DON'T report "accidents" that happen in the room to the hotel staff. I work front desk at a hotel, and a lady once came down and told me that their kid had wet the bed, so they stripped the linens off and flipped the mattress, and just needed new sheets. EWW! Let housekeeping know so they can treat the situation appropriately, instead of just trying to deal with it yourself!

(On the plus side, although stinky, isn't urine sterile?)

There are all kinds of things icky about hotel mattresses. People do all kinds of things on them. Don't think that any hotel bed, whether at Disney or not, is clean. Sleep on them, nap on them, do what ever you want on them, but think of these beds as being dirtier than the floor... and if you had a black light (like on Room Raiders) you might actually see what's on them.

It doesn't totally reduce the ick factor, because discovering someone else's wet spot where you are supposed to sleep is icky and should be fixed immediatly, but I have also been told by my doctor that urine is sterile, so you can't "catch" anything from it. I won't say you can't get sick from it, because it could definately turn someone's stomach :guilty:
Good to know about the mattress covers being available upon request. We may do that. DD is potty trained but once in a blue moon she will wet the bed and I was kind of torn as to what to do about it. Thanks to the Dis'ers with that info!

Everyone is kinda freaked out about the urine but it got me to thinking about how many "romantic" episodes must take place on those beds. How many times have you slept in someones "fun time" spot??

As far as the whole wet bed incident ... that is a case where the posters family member should have stomped his feet until he got satisfaction. Sometimes being meek does not pay off. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

We had an incident happen with our room at the WL and got a night comped + free dinner ... so yes, Disney does believe in "compensation" but you have to get the right person and use the right language. We were told by the front desk to take our complaints to guest services and e-mail them after we left (we said "NOT" knowing once we left nothing would happen) so hubby took it up with the hotel manager and got things done. The main question most people do not ask is "How are you going to compensate me for this?" they will not offer so you have to ask and be persistant.

They fixed the problem ASAP (the same day) and compensated us.

This is one of the reasons I like to stay in the deluxe though because I do belive you do not get the same service at the values, that was my one time experience anyway.

I agree with you, because I would have protested loudly, AND because I know more about how WDW works than my brother does. It was his first trip with his family, and he was really tired of waiting around for managers who never showed up. He didn't know what else to do, or where else to turn. I think that the All Star management really dropped the ball on this one. Why should he have to spend his very expensive vacation time waiting for their convenience, to remedy a situation that shouldn't have occurred?

My brother is also a lot more laid-back than I am and, if I do say so myself, a much, MUCH nicer person. He is the absolute kindest, gentlest person I have ever met in my life; I can honestly say that in all of our years growing up together, we never once got into an argument. And that was no thanks to me :)

It just seems a pity that someone who is gentle and courteous would be so grievously taken advantage of. I was very upset that they would give him an appointment time with the management, make him wait, then blow him off. By then, his first priority was to salvage the trip as best he could, by not losing any more park time for his family.

The whole situation just made me sad, and I would be happy if it could be avoided by better customer service at WDW and by a better standard of cleanliness. I've read the posts that urine doesn't spread disease, but it would take a whole heck of a lot of convincing to get me to sleep on a pee spot! And yes, I am sure I've slept in a lot of "fun spots" :) but 1. they were dry, and 2. presumably (as far as I could tell), the sheet over the spot was clean. Still gross, I know, but not as blatant as a big, yellow, wet spot.

Cheers!

I hear you and I agree that All Star Sports dropped the ball. I am sorry this happened to your brother.
Even more so since he is a kind and gentle person and I think they took advantage of him because of his kind demeanor.
Since there were no rooms to transfer his family to they should cleaned the bed right away, and offered to bring in a rollaway if the bed would not dry in time for the night.
That is the very least they should have done.

Yes, the All Stars are a value hotel but they still need to provide good customer service. The service was lacking and I see no excuse for that!

LOL ! I 'm glad the OP started this thread. I was going to ,but I chickened out.

I also heard the bedspreads /comforters used in hotels are rarely ever washed at all. I always pull the bedspread off the bed and don't have it touching me at all. I'd rather freeze at night in the air conditioning ,than to have a nasty bedspread or comforter on me. They change the sheets but not the bedspreads.

i don't think they change the bedspread OR blanket with each guest, only the sheets. i think they'll bring up a newly washed blanket and bedspread if you call and ask for one.

hotel rooms have always grossed me out. i heard a urine/semen expose on a tv news magazine years ago, and have never been the same. we never go barefoot, bedspreads/blankets go off to a corner of the room and we leave instructions for maid service not to make the beds when they service the room. we often bring our own blankets, put toothbrushes on a washcloth or standing in a cup, wear hard plastic (fast-drying) flipflops in the shower, and i wish i could get my family to do the "tv-remote-in-a-baggie" thing, but they know i've way crossed over the line on that one. :teeth:

don't you think that towels that are still folded stay put for the next guest? no way to know if someone wiped a hand, or other part, on it....

Why do we do this to ourselves?!?!?! I'm just like you! This year I brought Clorox wipes and wiped down the bathroom surfaces as well as door knobs and remotes. That said, I tried real hard to not obsess over the room. But I didn't walk barefoot or lay on the bedspread! I never even thought about wet mattresses until this thread! But what kills me is that we look forward to these vacations, spend hundreds of dollars a night to stay in a Disney resort, and then act like we're staying at the YMCA! I seriously think I'll look into buying a travel trailer in the future. At least then it will be MY mattress, MY shower, MY bedspread, etc. :woohoo:

I REALLY don't want to know the answer to this question......... :badpc: :badpc: :badpc: :badpc: :badpc: :badpc:

On our last morning in the room, I always pull every towel down and put it in the tub. I figure it's a curtiousy for the next person. And, honestly, I do it the first day too--just to make sure.

I havent stayed on site for A LONG time
but when I stayed, at both poly and the conteporary, their mattresses had a vinal surface, not cloth like the ones I have at home
I have no idea if they still do, but almost 20 years ago, they did
(and they sure were uncomforatble)
