Bedtime for middle school kids?

when i was in middle school it was 10 for me i think. :cool1:

Both my boys (13 and 14) are adhd. I can't get my youngest to be before 10-1030 and he is up at 6am. My older one is a little easier but he likes to sleep a bit later. The rule is... if you can get up in the am without a fight then I let it slide. They both make it to school on time and the bus. Go figure. I need to be asleep by 8! :rotfl2:

My kids NEED their sleep or they become the walking dead....true zombies!!!

I say if it aint broke, dont fix it. Who cares what other kids do. This is your DD. Studies have shown that todays youth is under nourished in many ways, not just food value, but they are sleep deprived too!

We have an 8-8:30 bedtime here but my DD is only 9. We use the 9pm extension as a reward. If there is something on TV we might allow them to stay up that bit extra to watch. Like on sunday night we watch extreme home makeover as a family unit because it brings charity and humanity into our home and a tool for us to show our children the other side of the coin, so to speak.

Anyways, just my two cents! I want my kids to have optimum brain power and adequate sleep is just a part of that equation.

My DS (6th grade) bedtime is 10pm on school nights. He gets up at 6:15 in the morning. He's a night person and if he went to bed earlier he'd just be awake until then anyways and he is never grumpy in the mornings.

DD (10th grade) doesn't really have a set time, she sometimes goes to bed earlier than DS and sometimes not until 11pm on school nights. She gets up at 6:00 a.m.

My 12 yr old in 7th grade goes to bed at 9:30 to read and lights out at 10:00. She gets up at 6:50 am.

My 7th grader falls asleep around 9:30 or 10:00 and gets up at 7 am MWF and 6 am T, TH for Jazz band practice. He really needs more sleep then this but just can't fall asleep earlier. He is a total NIGHT OWL. He goes to be around 9 PM and reads, but doesn't fall asleep easily. Our twins are in 4th grade and are asleep by 9PM and wake up on their own--DS around 6 am and DD around 6:30.

My 7th grade DD's bedtime is 10:30 pm. She has to get up at 7 am.

It's completely individual.I have three kids and they have all had different bedtimes because they all have different sleep requirements. My 11yo DD has a 10pm bedtime, but only because her school starts later and she functions just fine on that schedule. If she were having a hard time getting up or her grades were slipping, I would definitely move it back down to 9pm. :ssst:

My 6th grader is still in elementary and doesn't need to get up until 7:45 so he goes to bed at 10, but is usually awake later. Next year is going to be a bear because jr high starts much earlier. He'll have to get up at 5:45! I've already been warning him he'll have to be in bed earlier than his little brother - which I know is going to kill him!

My just turned 12 year old starts heading to bed at 10, but usually falls asleep much later due to all the goofing off she does before actually going to sleep. She gets up around 7:15. BUT there are nights that she'll go to bed early if she feels tired. The older girls (15 and 16 1/2) pretty much set their own bedtimes now. As long as they get up in the mornings (7) I have no problems with it. My 15 yr old is usually the first one to be sleeping most nights. Probably because she runs track ( indoor right now and plus she does indoor soccer) so she gets tired faster. She has also called from friends houses to be picked up earlier then the arranged time because she is falling asleep there. I figure at this age they all know how much sleep they need. It all depends on what amount your kids need. If they stay up later and are cranky with less sleep then they obvously need to sleep earlier. this is really a discision based on each individual child and what works best for them.

This reminds me of the Cosby show when Rudy wanted to stay up later so they let her choose when to go to bed. She started staying up to watch Johnny Carson and got really cranky very fast.

My 8th grade DD goes to bed 10-10:30 and gets up at 6:15. If she's tired she may go earlier.
My 5th grade Dd goes to bed at 9:30. She doesn't have to get until 7:30-7:45. She's going to be in culture shock next year in middle school when she's getting up at 6:15.

well i know that i am currently in 12th grade but i dont have a bedtime anymore. i try and get to bed about 12-12:30. and i get up at 6:30. its my own job to choose how much sleep i want.
