My DD8 would like new bedding etc and she is at the in-between age where princess stuff (or what she has) is too young but she is not old enough for a tween or teen-like room. How would you update it knowing that in a couple of years you might have to do it again? She has light pink walls and white trim. I really would rather not paint it.

My daughter is that age, and we went through the same thing. She loves the zebra print. It goes with the pink and just took a plain set of pink sheets, zebra blanket on the bed, some throw pillows, a new lamp, and a pink rug. We did it for under $100 (found everything on amazon or walmart).

With your existing color scheme of pink and white you can add in some purple and green, and reduce the amount of pink for a different look.

Stick with the easily changed out things- curtains, bedding, fun pillows, a rug. There are some really neat wall decals out there too- I looked at several on Amazon.

DD12 has light purple walls with a pink/purple/green flower border. She had flowered curtains. She had that from age 3 to a couple of years ago. She wanted to redo. One grandma made new curtains out of purple and pink fabric that has a glittery sheen to it (Michael Miller Fairy Frost I think). The other grandma made a pink and purple quilt with printed squares of old-fashioned fairies. Also, I got some great butterfly wall decals on Amazon. That's all we did.

Now, this fall she will be moving into our room as we added a new bedroom on for ourselves. She plans to paint the walls a deep blue and purple, and add the Disney glitter topcoat that they sell at Walmart.

The girls are also getting new closets this fall with the remodel and DD14 is planning on teal walls with mirrored wall decals in the shape of stars.

Ooh, I think an apple or lime green would look great with light pink walls if she is into that combination. It would be a great combo for that inbetween stage and even beyond.

My daughter picked dark blue for her room color last year when she was 12 and she got new furniture- dark rich looking wood. She was to old for little kids stuff and she loved this furniture. I thought I would hate the dark blue but I really liked it. Don't know what color she will pick next but the furniture is what she will have until she moves LOL.
Growing up my dad let me pick a new color to paint every 2 years and boy was he a good sport about my choices- my room was neon yellow two years, neon orange two years, neon green two years. I finally picked blue and I think he was happy that time LOL.

we have pink/green reversible bedding with pink accents--great for this age and will work well into teen years. If you invest in either white or pink accents (lamps, curtains, rugs, etc.) then you can switch to zerba/pink or tye-dye with pink in teen years. My DD at 8 got Barbie stick-ons from home depot for her walls and went with a Barbie theme, now at 12, same bedding, but without Barbie and added a few Vera Bradley. DD16 had the pink/green bedding (handed down to DD 12) and then switched to tye-dye, but still can use the white/pink accessories.

I would purchase a good quality plain white comforter or quilt set. Then you can change things up easily with a throw at the end of the bed, accent pillows, picture frames etc for a pop of color. I think you will eventually want to paint her room. Just pick a nice neutral color that looks good with white. Ikea is great for accessories.

If she has plain walls an inexpensive re-do is easy. Just have her pick out new comforter and curtains. You can find cheap room accessories like wall decals, pillows, frames this time of year during the dorm stuff store clearances going on soon (or even now).

My DD is nearly 6 and we are slowly redoing her room that her and her little sister will share. I have never gone the princess/Hello Kitty route in order to get some longevity!!

Her walls are pretty bright pink (been like that since she was 2) and her furniture is all brown (wood, armchair and Ikea bed) I have some dark brown curtains (block light) but we are adding punches of bright green for framed pictures (was hibiscuses for a while but will likely be family pictures now - she is a sentimental kind of girl!). We live on a farm so there are some 'John Deere' green punches too.

I want a room that will last. I can see swapping out the horse sheets for zebras in a few years and that is easy/cheap enough!

My DD also went with a black and white scheme to update her mostly blue room a while back. She also added touches of green and pinks with lamps and throw pillows.

Do you have an IKEA near you? They have duvets that are inexensive and the covers are also inexpensive and you can just buy a new duvet cover when she wants something different.

As far as the rest of it, shop your local thrift store and do some DIY projects: spray paint picture frames or lamps, use chalkboard paint on a table, add some new inexpensive pillows. On the walls, you can buy those stickers that peel off without damaging the walls to change the themes.

If you don't belong to Pinterest, you should join because if you spend a little time browsing around, you'll have more ideas than you'll ever be able to use. At her age, she can definitely be involved and work on the DIY projects too.

Wow! Thank you all for the fantastic ideas!

I had no clue about the glitter topcoat, I will be checking that out for sure. I know she would love that.

I checked IKEAs website and they have a cute pink buffalo check duvet set. Now I am looking for new curtains. I am not sure if a floral would look right or not, I will wait until I get the bedding on to see.

I have a green shelf that I could re-paint for her to use. I also will check out thrift stores to see if there is anything I could re-do from there. I saw that you can take any ceramic figures and spray paint them and it totally changes the look. I could do those in very bold colors.

I really like the idea of tye dye. I might use that for when she is older. I would have loved that as a young teen.

Thanks for your help!
