we have nevery used rails but last year our DD 2 at the time, still was in her crib/day bed conversion, since this was the first time in a bigger bed we just placed all the cusions on the floor and made a soft spot for her to land. She never fell out so I can't say how well they would have worked but the pull out beds are not very high and the cushions and extra pillows certainly made the distance much smaller.

The cushions do not come off of the BWV sleeper sofa. They flip underneath the bed when you open it up. This is not a platform style bed, so I don't think you can use bed rails on this type of sleeper sofa. It will be double sized if that will help.
