Bed bugs

Ugh!!! I’m starting to find this site less and less helpful. Thank you to the people who have been sincerely helpful on my path to buying DVC.

Just a question as we are trying to decide on a home resort. Is there one DVC resort that has more of an issue with bed bugs than others? I’ve never seen any bed bugs at Disney and yes, I think they do a phenomenal job keeping the rooms clean but just want to ask the question. Yes, I know you can get bed bugs from anywhere.
The simple as well as accurate and truthful answer is NO.

You definitely won’t find any of those Value or Moderate bedbugs. When choosing a home resort, keep in mind AKV is an animal sanctuary.
If you get a value room at AKV, are deluxe resort bedbugs still available...or will they stick you with cheaper bedbugs?
I'd want to know the quality of bedbugs we'd be putting in the oven when we got home. Ingredient quality affects the recipe flavor.

And this right here makes me wonder if I want to be a part of the DVC. Not everyone, but I feel a hint of sarcasm from some people in this group and as though you are better than others that stay in the “cheaper” value or moderate rooms. I know millionaires that stay at the value resorts, they are smart with their money. Hence, why they are millionaires. I’m pretty sure most DVC members are regular everyday people so some of you need to get your head out of your butt. I asked a simple question. When you have worked helping different medical facilities have to get rid of bed bugs then you might view the question with less sarcasm.

Unfortunately I think the OP is probably frustrated because, as others have mentioned, there is no accurate list of bed bug reports by any hotel including DVC. Hotels, Disney included, would unlikely provide this information to anybody unless compelled by law to do so. So the truth is that there really is no way of knowing. Even if this information were available and accurate, I don't think if one resort did have more reports than another it would not necessarily indicate that that hotel has a problem. Because of this, there should not be any greater concern about bed bugs at one DVC resort over another.

I know (unfortunately from experience) that getting rid of bed bugs is a MAJOR undertaking. If a DVC resort had multiple reports of bed bugs, that would indicate that the bugs are in the walls of the hotel and not just in the beds. I am sure that if this were the case, they would be taking all steps possible to eradicate the problem. And that could happen literally anywhere.

My best advice would be to not let bed bugs be a factor in which resort you choose. Rather, I would make a point of checking the room very carefully before each stay. That's what I do, at every hotel, every time regardless of how nice (or not) it is. That is truly the only way to prevent bed bugs.

dvc is just like any hotel and subject to bed bugs. It doesn’t mean the hotel or even the room is unclean. Heck I read a BA 787flight was cancelled because a pax found a bed bug in their business class pod

if you stay enough nights in a hotel like I have you are guaranteed to find bed bugs, fact of travel

prevention strategies are what will save from bringing them home. as I said prior check the mattress and soft goods like sofa. I only do the mattress. Put your luggage onto hard surfaces like a suit case rack. Never place your bags on the sofa or bed.

when you get home place everything into a bed bug oven. If you don’t have one buy one. If you refuse to buy one leave your luggage in the garage and remove everything immediately into the washing machine

if bed bugs come home you will regret not owning a bed bug oven

i can’t imagine not wanting to be a DVC member because you may have sensed a tone on a forum thread. Toughen up a little and realize the sheer amount of members here who can give great info on everything DVC.

I don't think that those who respond on the DisBoards are really representative of DVC owners or the whole DVC system at all. There are a lot of people that go on these boards for fun and sometimes the jokes don't come across very well. I don't think anyone here is intending to ridicule or look down on anyone.

I just googled these ovens and they seem to work.
https://zappbug.com
That’s what I own. Heat is the only thing that kills bed bugs. The notion of leaving your luggage in the garage for a day or two and that will work is false bed bugs just go dormant.

the unit is cheap and takes an hour or two depending on the surrounding temp where the oven is placed. But you have total piece of mind. nothing melts and I have never had anything in there get damaged. Pre covid I was doing 100 nights a year and over 100k distance flown yearly. So lots of bed bug oven use.

I wouldn’t put electronics in it though

My worst bed bug experience was in london when I pulled up the sheet and the sides of the bed were covered In bugs. This was 11pm, I was exhausted as I had just flown in and was leaving at 6am the next day but I showed the hotel and they comped my room and gave me ridiculous amount of loyalty points for my silence

On Disney property, never in nearly 100 separate stays have I had a bed bug incident. THANK GOODNESS! Traveling across the world and staying in "local" type accommodations (think about Motel 6 quality typically - but CLEAN) never a bed bug. Only 1 time have I been in a room with bed bugs. They bit me all over!!! It was an alumni weekend at my alma mater and not many choices for hotels in the small town. Lucky us with a 2 star stay and a crap-ton of bed bugs! Nowhere to move to. Hotel didn't care. 3 nights of this! They were in the mattress... I squished those I could find. Damage was done. I looked like I had been attacked by mosquitos on my face and back. Itched like crazy! I look at mattresses now everywhere I check in. Thankfully that was my only experience with them and hopefully my last! (I stay in hotels probably every other weekend from January through May... then maybe once a month over the summer... and back to every other weekend in the Fall). So, I am a frequent traveler, and thankfully have only that one stay that wrecked me!

Bed bugs come up so infrequently here that I think people are just having a little fun with it. If you search the DVC forum, I'd be surprised if bed bugs were mentioned in more than 10-15 threads per year. There are around 5500 DVC rooms at WDW alone, with different parties checking in every few days. With so many rooms and so few problems reported, there isn't nearly enough data to draw conclusions regarding specific resorts.

When you work in certain professions you think about it lol!! I’m an Infection Prevention Nurse. I’ll be around COVID any day but don’t sent a bed bug my way 😀

I’d rather take care of a full load of pts with COVID than one with bedbugs.

(Just the thought of bedbugs makes me want to scratch everywhere. COVID these days is just the pt in the next room.)

DVC is not actually a club, despite the name. It is a timeshare in which you prepay for lodging.

Thinking of it this way - which is what it is - is essential to not being disappointed later. Disney's treatment of "members," perks and many other things ebb and flow. The only guarantee is the prepayment of lodging.

They would be same quality, but a little smaller. :)

Why would someone be “pro” bedbug and want “more bedbugs in your vacation experience”?
Personal preference. Like...some people are afraid of snakes, whereas others handle them, and are fascinated by them. ;)
That’s ridiculous!!
Yes. I meant it to be. It looked like your question was answered, and the thread would have just moved into forum obscurity. Posting absurd comments sometimes keeps the thread alive, and then people post more and possibly useful information. It's my way of bumping a thread I might find interesting.

This thread got me wondering, does housekeeping change the sheets on the pull down Murphy beds after each guest?
