Okay...so someone spends time sitting in various airport seats, then on an actual airplane seat, puts their carry-on in an overhead bin with other luggage, meanwhile their luggage travels with hundreds of other suitcases, they take a shuttle from the airport to the hotel...and they're scared of a bedbug report in a hotel?
Let's up the hysteria- we get sniffer dogs through our store every other month (they're so cute, Princess and Baron) and more than pillows, clothes and bedding, they usually find traces in dresser drawers and picture frames.
Also, people use 'bedbug' to describe every creepie-crawlie. The could be beetles or dust mites. People who find bugs in hotel rooms are instant entemologists. Yes, bedbugs are distinctive looking but a lot of people don't stop to look.
It's just like when people hear of mould in a house/school etc, they immediately say 'black mould' because it's worst-case scenario.
