My girlfriend and I had the opportunity to attend a preview of Beauty and the Beast in 3D at the Dowtown Disney AMC Theaters this past weekend. I really enjoyed it (as I always have with that treasure of a picture). I thought the 3D added a little to it, but not a large amount. Anyone else see it yet? What say ye?

I saw the 3D trailer before "Hugo" and it left me with no desire to see the film in 3D. It looked to me the like the 3D transfer was clumsy and added nothing to the film other than the sense of looking at paper cutouts floating over a background.

Seems to me that this was a quickie 3D conversion job done to capitalize on the 3D trend and see how much more they can milk from the faithful.

It's ridiculous to think that Disney ever would do such a thing...

It's about magic, dreams, and wonder. It's not about money...its about extending Walt's legacy to all those that believe in the goodness of man and want our world to be united in happy song...

buy the way...the stock is currently taking a beating - down 2.88% on the session to 38.51 and div/yield is at 0.60/1.56...:scared1:

Probably a true statement but I relish the opportunity to see B&B on the big screen again.

I can't imagine anything shot without 3D in mind would look all that good in a 3D conversion. Animation might be different than live-action in that respect, but B&tB is still primarily pen&ink animation, and I think that'd be a lot harder than digital animation to "upgrade" after the fact.

The biggest problem here, other than their cheaping out in doing this 3D conversion, is the fact that many major scenes in this movie were actually animated with a 3D aspect in mind; as in they're not visually 3D but their animation grid was set in a virtualized 3D scene, so its actually impossible to make those look good in 3D like Lion King. Lion King, and many other classic animated features, utilize layered cell animation, so to create the 3D effect they simply differ the space between cells and use the 3D tech to make front layers stand out. Not the case here. They're doing this one for the cash using another popular title...

I couldn't agree more. Weather or not we agree with it, this is how our little ones will remember they saw it at the movies. I still think that part is cool...

I saw it and I agree that the 3D didn't add a lot to the film, but it didn't hurt it either. I notced the 3D the most in the first scene as the camera is moving through the forest. I wouldn't have had a problem paying to see it again on the big screen even it had been released in 2D so I felt I got my money's worth. Not to mention that the Tangled short was almost worth the price of admission itself.

I thought it looked as convincing as any animated 3D movie I've seen.

Did it ADD anything? No... but I think it did blend in seamlessly, and the times when I thought about the effect and looked around for it, it really did seem to be more than cutouts at different depths.
