Beat the Blerch

We got ours in the mail yesterday, and I was surprised by the quality of the medals -- very cool to have and be a part of the event, if only virtually. Also enjoyed the extra little goodies of Haribo gummy bears and cupcake lip balm (frosting flavored)! :lmao: Next week is a step-back week in our training program, so we may bump up this Sat/Sun from 5 and 12 to a 10k and half so we can treat ourselves to birthday cake and magical grape beverages afterward. . . :hyper:
Don't touch the gummy bears until you read this

http://www.amazon.com/Haribo-Sugar-Free-Gummy-Bears/dp/B008JELLCA

That's the most interesting sugar-filled list of ingredients for a sugar-free product I've ever read. :) (someone should probably let amazon know)

And then from the comments I've been lead to reading about lycasin and the stomach complalints it can cause. Thank goodness the gelatin will keep me from eating these (if it's in the IRL run packet) b/c I don't want my stomach to have that reaction! :)

Going to pick up my packet for Sunday in a couple hours here. :thumbsup2

Whew! I did the 10K, by the way.

Turns out nutella sandwiches are delicious, but don't help me to run better. I had to walk a LOT after having one. Also tried the magical grape beverage. Spoiler alert: Clif cran-razz drink mixed with purplypink Crystal Light. I'd be annoyed (I don't do sugarfree things) but hey, I was eating strange birthday cake at the end so I am not going to freak about two dixie cups worth of that. Plus, it was tasty. Helped to allay the nutella.

Because the sandwich messed with me, and because I'd already grabbed a dixie cup full of cake and I do NOT waste cake, I carried a cup of cake with me for half of the run. :rolleyes1 OK maybe I snagged some frosting from the cake in the cup at each mile. I might carry frosting with me in a baggie from now on. :thumbsup2 I'm thinking that I vaguely understand the McFlurry thing now!

I didn't PR, but I walked a bunch of it after the nutella and was only 4 minutes longer than last weekend's 10K. Given that this was a trail run, and I was in very thin-soled running shoes, and there were pointy rocks underfoot for a lot of it, that's OK.

I have to say...the mood in the air was WAY more joyful than any Disney run I've been to yet. It might just be my perception, but I'm the same person today than I was at the DL Half or WDW Half or TOT. There was joy, there were smiles and talking to strangers, and people with wings had SHORT wings, not big wide wings that hit other people as they run. Eh hem. Pet peeve there.

There were two women running with full boxes of donuts from Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland. No idea how they did it. Unless they ate the donuts as they went, LOL. (in which case I don't know how they ran! I saw inside the boxes, those were BIG donuts!)

I enjoyed today quite a bit. But I won't do that course again. No more trail runs for me!

Glad you had fun! I really hope more people share their experiences!

Did you notice any difference in swag between the different race lengths? If the 10k gets the same stuff as the marathon, then I'm going to sign up for the 10k and have a lot more fun!

I don't think there was any difference in swag. The shirts (long sleeved, half zip, and very much on the small side) said what race you were in, and "finisher" along with graphics. I should take a picture. :) They are cute tops.

Some were running in them. They looked very very hot by the end; black long sleeves when the Full didn't even start until 9am? By the 10am 10K start (all were rolling starts, with self-placed "corrals" or "clumps of people") the sun was out in full force!

The big swag difference was between virtual and IRL. There was some grumbling on the IRL people's part. Virtual people got a Blerch stressball and the 0.0 m sticker which is very cute. IRL runners had to buy those things. And some people liked the short sleeved, green, t-shirt the Virtuals got (that the IRL runners had to buy). I like the long sleeve. But look where I live, LOL; far more likely that I'll be using the long sleeve.

And virtuals had to pick their own course, supply their own treats, etc. Whereas we got staff and free parking (I happened upon the free parking at the dog park, which was AWESOME, and I'm so glad I just followed the signs to parking even though I sort of thought it was the prepaid and I hadn't prepaid) and our tasty treats were paid for.

As is usual for me, I can see both sides. I should have bought a 0.0 sticker, though. To honor myself a couple years ago. :)

Gotta say, the medal might be my fave medal. It's so cute. Most finisher medals go into the box that they stay in (until we have our own house and I feel comfy putting them up somewhere), but this guy got to sit on my bedside table overnight. :)

Forgot to mention the Blerches chasing people. I saw none actually *chasing*. After all, they are Blerches. They don't run. :) After the 10K turnaround, and since everything was all on the same course, this spot was passed twice by everyone, there was a young female Blerch, standing there with a serious and almost somber expression. I heard her saying, quite seriously, "no one's forcing you to do this, you know"... Exactly what a Blerch would say, LOL. It could be a LOT of fun to volunteer as a Blerch, that's for sure.

TheOatmeal has got to be feeling very proud of himself today, because it was a really good event. He's also got to be sore, with two Halfs back to back. :)

That is hilarious! If the race comes to the East Coast and is close enough for me, I would definitely want to race one day and volunteer on another!

I wanted to know about the swag because I wasn't sure if everyone got the same medal and tshirt, or if they were specific for the race length. I'm a little bitter I guess, I don't want to kill myself running a full or half, if I could have gotten the exact same stuff doing a 10k ;)

Only the ribbon is different for each race. 10K was green, another race was yellow, and I'm not sure the third color.

Remember that with the 10K you only get ONE aid station (though you pass through it once, go to the turnaround, then pass through a second time). With the Half then Full there are WAY more opportunities to make yourself ill, LOL. And more couches. And apparently there was a Sasquatch.

So you get the increased stuff-during-the-run, even if you just get the same swag. And a different color ribbon.

ETA: remember this was inaugural. He might change things up as he does more. :)

Very good points!

For fun.....

Now THIS is a great time to have a nutella sandwich. Once you're done!

Yum. They also had potato chips and..something else I didn't want. Also water in a cooler, fresh from a hose tap COUNTRY water (delicious), and more of the purple drink.

Darn that Blerch! Always trying to get us to sit down!

The front.

Realized today it's even smaller than I thought, because it should have long-long sleeves so you can use the thumbholes. But the sleeves aren't long enough for me to use the holes AND have room to move in the shoulder area. Darn.

The medal and ribbon. You can see that 10K is on the ribbon in one part.

Why does the Blerch have to be so cute?

Even the bib was themed. Sorry for the ribbon across the center. An artistic move that didn't pan out.

They really did an excellent job with that stuff! I am super excited to do it now! I really hope they pick a location close enough to me!

I just saw on facebook that one of the runners in Saturday's Half-Marathon collapsed and died. My heart goes out to his friends and family.

A memorial race and fund have been set up in his honor. I can't link to it directly, unfortunately.

It's just so sad.

I have I idea if there was something like this behind his death, but it reminds me that I want to find a cardiologist to do a check on me and my son, just to see if there's something we should be aware of.

Definitely sad news about the runner that passed. It was actually during Sunday's half, not that that really matters. Make sure you treasure every moment you have!

As for my race experience, I ended up running the half on Saturday. I was originally signed up for the full, but was able to switch races easily at packet pick up. As for swag, yeah, it's kind of a bummer that the virtual race swag bag had more stuff in it - the stress blerch and the 0.0 sticker specifically - but in the end I didn't find it to be a big deal. I liked the green shirts the virtual race got, and would love to have one, but I really like the pullovers we got as well. The one I got at packet pickup was a women's XXL, but it was waaaaaay too small. Actually, according to my friends, all the women's sizes ran a little small. Plus, since I had switched races, mine said "full marathon" on it, since they were race-specific. Luckily, on race day post-race, they let me exchange my too-small shirt for a men's size that fits much better and says half-marathon finisher. I wore it to work today and it was sooo comfy!

As for the race itself, I had so much fun, despite the fact that I hadn't been training as much the past 2 months as I should have been (this my switch from the full to the half). I remember running out of the first aid station, after stopping for pics with a Sasquatch in the woods and some blerches on a couch, following a bleach who was chasing after some runners calling, "you can stop now! You've gone far enough! You deserve done cake!" And I couldn't help but lap, and say to the women I was near, "This is the best. Seriously." It was just so beautiful and lighthearted and full of joy.

As for the aid stations, I loved interactions with the blerches. I didn't have any cake, even post-race, even though Iove cake, because the thought of eating it right then made me want to puke. I did try the Nutella sandwiches (yum!), the grape drink hit the spot, especially when my nuun-filled water bottles were empty (so good! And the ones I had were just grape Crystal light, no clif stuff mixed in), and every aid station had vanilla Clif gels (just like frosting! One of my faves) and Lara bar samples.

The metals we got were pretty much the same as the virtual race, except with the race distance specified on them.

Despite the great time I had, there were a few negatives. Despite the beauty of running through the woods, i was not a huge fan of the trail course. It was really rocky, some spots were quite uneven, and since the trail is also used for horseback riding, you had to had to keep your eyes down and peeled for poo-piles. Also, there just weren't enough water stations, especially for the warmer weather we had last weekend. Every 3 miles is definitely not frequent enough water for me, and I was so glad I had my hydration belt. And finally (and also most egregiously), there was no portapotties at the 2nd/3rd aid station for the half marathon. Basically, there was one at mile 3, but if you had to go and didn't hit up that one, you had to wait until you passed that same one on the way back into town, at mile 10. Luckily, I didn't need a bathroom during the race, but I definitely heard people asking around at the mile 6/7 aid station.

All in all, unless the location changes, I'd probably only do the 10k next year, since I wasn't a fan of the rocks.

Here are some of my pictures during the race!

Great pics! Thanks for sharing!

I was reading on FB or twitter or somewhere that there were hidden potties on the longer courses. Hidden! Eep.

Definitely not enough water stops even for the 10k.

When I got the grape drink at the end they had both powder containers on the top of the igloo cooler. I asked about it and they said it was a mix. Maybe they ran out of the clif? Would be odd to just have the crystal since that's not an electrolyte thing, but all I know is because of what I was told :)

After the run, before I went to my car and heard the sirens (so sad...I signed the family up for the memorial 5k 4 days before I leave for wine&dine) , I bought my son a $5 Blerch stress ball. He admired it at packet pickup and I realized that he inspires me to beat my own Blerch every day!

Hidden doesn't really make sense! Oh well!

FYI, in the post-race survey I just got, it mentioned having races next year in Philly, San Diego, Chicago, and Denver, in addition to Seattle. I'd definitely be up for traveling for this race and hitting another course!

And it definitely could have been mixed, even though it tasted just grape to me. One of the stations had both red and purple drink as well, but it could be the volunteers there just didn't do the mixing part.

Philly would be perfect!! I hope that materializes :yay:

Watch, they will schedule it on a day I am already signed up for another race
