Since this is a Disneyworld site and most of the talk is about vacationing and there are so many people on this board, I figured this is a good place to ask....

We just got home last night from Disneyworld. Next vacation, if possible, is going to be the beach. I went to Ocean City from the time I was 2 every year with my parents until we tried Myrtle Beach when I was a teenager. I have some ideas of what I want as a beach vacation for my family.

I would probably be interested in south of Myrtle Beach. I figure the water is probably warmer as I can remember Ocean City being pretty cold compared to Myrtle.

I do NOT want it as commercialized as Ocean City or Myrtle Beach. I am more interested in renting a small cottage right on the beach. I want to sit on the porch overlooking the beach and drink a nice cold beer. I want to sit out grilling a steak on the porch while my kids are playing out on the beach. Is that possible? So far, I haven't looked much, but what I see is the rentals on one side of the road and the beach on the other. I want the beach directly off the back porch.

Anyone have any suggestions I can look up. We stayed outside of Savannah on our way down to Disney last Saturday and saw that Tybee Island is a short drive from Savannah. I looked up Tybee, but as I said, the rentals were on the opposite side of the road from the beach. We were going to take a drive to Tybee, but it was too late when we were there and we were tired and still had more driving the next day to Disney.

I don't think I want to be as far south as Savannah. At the North Carolina welcome center, I picked up a few of the brochures for the various beaches that I will research. Anyone have any less commercialized locations in North or South Carolina they can recommend?

Much better options than Tybee.....

If you want quiet, layed back, you could look into Edisto.
We visited a time-share there at the end of the island.
But, it is NOT really developed, at all.
At that time, they did not even have drinkable/potable tap water.
So, it was bottled water!
But, very nice...
Could hit places like Charleston from there if you want.

When are you wanting to go.

I hear the Oil could, eventually, loop up around from Florida and actually affect the East Coast, Outer Banks, etc....

The Outer Banks, further down from Nags Head/KittyHawk the better, might also be a good destination. it has been many years, but I remember an awesome beach day with warm beautiful water!

Now, I LOVE the FL panhandle area...
The white sand and gorgeous water are unparalleled.
There are (pricey) beach home rentals too.
But, OMG.... this oil tragedy is just :sad1:

Right now, we are even looking at Playa Del Carmen for a beach vacation for next spring.

how about new jersey. What you are describing sounds like Long Beach Island. I live at the jersey shore and LBI so great. Its family friendly...many houses to rent. Its safe. Theres great shopping and lots to do and great restaurants. Its not like the "Jersey shore" on MTV..actually nothing like that at all. its a really great place. My family always say its very "disney-fied" haha

For that kind of beach vacation, look at Holden Beach, Topsail Island, Emerald Isle, and possibly Atlantic Beach, all in North Carolina. Most of these still have reasonably priced houses directly on the ocean. Atlantic is probably the most condo-built of the ones I've mentioned.

You may also want to consider Sunset Beach, North Carolina. It is close to Myrtle but very different in feeling. It is not commercial at all as they are just now replacing the floating bridge over the waterway with a concrete bridge.

Anywhere in the Outer Banks would work. Amelia Island (northeast of Jacksonville) as well, and has a charming town area. St. Augustine Beach is pretty as well. Jekyll Island in Georgia is also pretty, but very pricey...

Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, Pawleys Island. Lots of on the beach options. Just depends on how much you want to spend ;) We're in Hilton Head right now. Off the beach a bit but we love to ride our bikes around the plantation.
