We are going to be staying one night in Newport Beach on May 24. I lived in Fountain Valley 30 years ago and went to NB alot back then.

While I like both (we used to live in LA), I used to find Huntington Beach a little more laid back and preferred it. I think there is a Ruby's Diner on the pier there that would be a good place to eat with your kids since they are young. I also have vague memories of some shops nearby (although I could be getting mixed up with Manhattan Beach). We were in Newport Beach for a 4th of July once and while it was fun, I just have better memories of Huntington Beach.

Huntington Beach has changed alot. There are tons of shops, restaurants, movie theaters etc. We saw Finding Nemo for the first time there, and walked out of the theater to hear seagulls, and I swear they were saying Mine, Mine, Mine!!!! LOL

There was a cool kite shop on the pier too as of 2003. My ds and his cousin played on the beach for hours, digging up shells, little crabs and just playing in the water. I was fun for me to watch the surfers.

I remember back in the early 80's there was hardly anything there, just a few surf shops.

Have fun!
