Before I begin the review, it is important to note that we are two adults, no children. When we vacation, we tend to eat at the signature restaurants, to get a quieter atmosphere. We don't object to well-behaved children, but we don't have children of our own to take into account when we examine a resort's appropriateness for our own vacation needs. What I may like or dislike about this resort would probably be quite different if I were a mother of four youngsters, so I like to take that into consideration when reading resort reviews.

Anyway, on with the review. We checked in early Saturday (1/13) morning. This was our first stay at the Beach Club Resort, so we were unsure whether we should check in at the main level, or whether there was a separate check-in for concierge level. We arrived at the main desk and asked this question. The lady there was very friendly, gave us the key card to get to the 5th level in the elevator, and, after she'd asked us whether we'd stayed with them before, she gave us First Visit buttons. These were cute and nice souvenirs, but we didn't wear them in the parks, as we'd been there dozens of times!

We got up to the concierge level, and Hyacinth checked us in. She was very friendly, and it turned out that our room, number 5704, was ready already (it was only 7:30 am). We stopped by the room to drop our things off, then grabbed a quick breakfast in the concierge lounge.

The concierge lounge here is SMALL. We like to use the lounge as a sort of haven from the noise & bustle of the parks, so we were disappointed to find it crammed to the hilt. We also noticed many more children here, and, possibly because of this, the snack offerings tended to be more child-centered. There were three different varieties of Krispy Kreme doughnuts: glazed, chocolate with sprinkles, and raspberry filled. This was fine by me, but my DH missed the meat & cheese breakfast selection at the GF concierge level.

There were so many people here that there weren't enough chairs for them all. We'd gotten there just before the big breakfast rush, but I would probably have found it disappointing to have paid for concierge service and then not have been able to find a seat. We noticed quite a few people standing around waiting for tables or else taking their food back to their rooms.

There were more children in this resort than in others we've been in, and, because they were crowded into such a small area, it tended to get quite loud. The adults were loud, too - there was some football playoff thing going on, so some of the adults were getting rowdy in the lounge. I think it was the lack of space more than anything else; we don't like lots of noise & crowds when we're in our hotel.

Because the lounge is so small, they don't have those nice, plush, "sink into me and relax" chairs that the Boardwalk Inn and the Grand Floridian have. The chairs here were wooden dining chairs only.

The afternoon snacks were nothing spectacular and, again, seemed to be more child-centered, including things like pudding snack packs, cheddar popcorn, etc. The lemonade was great, but that's always my favorite refreshing drink from the various concierge lounges.

The evening offerings were also okay, not great. Again, they were much more limited than the evening offerings from the Boardwalk Inn & Grand Floridian. One evening, they had extremely soggy (since kept in a covered chafing dish) fish & chips and cream of mushroom soup. The cream of mushroom soup was great - very creamy and delicious, and had lots of chunks of mushrooms in it. Another evening, we had pork ribs and clam chowder. I don't eat meat (I'm a pescatarian), so I wasn't able to eat much that evening. Which was okay, and I'm used to having things I won't eat no matter where I stay.

The cheese selection here was disappointing, in that it was quite limited. The dessert selection, though, was GREAT! They had Rice Krispie treats, lemon icebox pie squares, raspberry & chocolate mousse, and two kind of cream filled puff pastry. The lemon squares were my favorite - they were rich and tasted just like the ones I loved as a child.

As far as the room itself, our room, 5704, had a view of the Beach Club Villas and part of Spaceship Earth. If we leaned out to the side, we could see part of Illuminations. This wasn't a big thing for us either way, though, as we're not huge Illuminations fans, and as we've had rooms at the BWI that have better fireworks views. So we were perfectly contented with the room view - I hadn't wanted a parking lot view, but didn't care otherwise.

The room was SMALL! We expected to have a table with two chairs, so that we could sit down together and eat. The lounge got so crowded and noisy that it was very stressful to us to be there, so, unless we'd hit it at a down time, we'd grab drinks or snacks and go back to the room. It would have been nice to have a place where we could both sit down and set our drinks on the table. Instead of which, we had to take turns eating at the table, with the other one sitting on the bed waiting. A small couch or armchair, even, would have been nice - just some place, besides the bed, for both of us to sit down.

This was probably just us not doing our homework on room sizes at the Beach Club but, having stayed in other deluxe resorts with a small sitting area or table & chairs, we had just expected this resort to be the same. Live & learn!

Anyway, here are some photos of the room:

I did like the new toiletries. These were great, and so much better than the old, black Mickey bottles. The shampoo in those used to weight my hair down and leave it with a slightly sticky feeling. This new shampoo & conditioner, though, was great! My hair felt soft and light: actually better than my own shampoo & conditioner at home. And they'd included more toiletries, with items like a toothbrush, toothpaste, and mouthwash.

Side note: is there a Beach Club ghost? We kept hearing a Wooooooooo sound, low at the beginning, rising high-pitched in the middle, then sinking lower at the end. Possibly the pipes? Whatever it was, it kept us giggling. That ghost was woooooing all night -I would wake up at 3 am, and there he'd be: Wooooooooo. It wasn't loud or irritating, and it certainly wasn't what kept waking me up. We weren't bothered by it in any way, but it was just a strange sound.

Overall, if we'd not gotten a great deal on this room, we would have been disappointed that we'd chosen this resort. I'd wanted to try it for a while, but we found it not to our liking for several reasons:
- Small bedroom with only one chair
- Small, crowded, noisy concierge lounge
- Many, many more young children (pre-K) than we'd seen in other deluxes
- More limited food selection

Our demographics play into this; as I said initially, we have a certain vacation style, and the Beach Club wasn't a good match. If I had a boisterous two-year-old, I might like it because I'd feel like his noise wouldn't be noticed among the general hubub. But that's not the case for us; we enjoy escaping from the noise & crowds of the parks to our peaceful resort. This just didn't fit that bill. The cast members here were fine, perfectly pleasant and accommodating, but it is not a hotel we'd return to.

Let me know if you have any questions - I would be more than happy to answer them if I could.

Cheers!

Thanks for the review, Heather. Great pics, too.

We were considering doing a split GF RPC/Epcot resort stay this July. It's great for me when another GF fan compares other resorts to the GF. I know what it is I love and appreciate about the GF and value your opinion. I have stayed at the BC a few times but not concierge. Your review has kind of turned me off the BC concierge, though. :guilty: Small & crowded isn't my thing. The pool would be the ultimate plus for us, but maybe YC?? Have you stayed concierge at the YC? I haven't read many positive reviews of the YC concierge, either, but would really love that pool in July. :goodvibes

Last July, we did WV YC. It didn't thrill me for a few reasons but we love the pool and location. I really enjoy concierge, though, so I am curious about that as a possibility now that BC is off my list. I have stayed BWI and service was really really bad so I am grasping here!

Thanks!

Lives4Disney :)

If you didn't care for Beach Club, you might want to give YC a try next time. It is much quieter and less busy than Beach Club - definitely fewer kids.

My concern about the Yacht Club is that I think I've read that they also have a small concierge lounge. If anyone could comment on that, I'd appreciate it.

Lives4Disney, we stayed concierge at BWI and LOVED it. Robin there is the absolute best; I can't believe you had a bad experience! I mean, I can, but it surprises me. We were actually more impressed by Robin than by anyone we've ever met staying GF RPC. We just stopped by there this Tuesday evening, and, though our last stay was in August 2004, Robin recognized me instantly. I guess that speaks more for how much I pestered them while we were there :) We had my SIL in tow, and had wanted to show her the concierge lounge, to assist her in planning her next WDW vacation. I've been talking up concierge level big-time, so wanted her to get to see what I was talking about.

We went into the Yacht Club lobby a few times and noticed it was much quieter, so, if the concierge lounge is up to par, perhaps that's one we'd check out in the future.

Cheers!

YC's lounge is just as small as BC's. I'm sure the YC lounge gets just as busy during the summer and has many children as the BC lounge. The only time we would consider visiting these resorts is during a very off time.

BWI is not as large as GF RPC. It seems to me that GF RPC is the largest on property. However, for an Epcot stay BWI gets my vote. They are a friendly bunch. You'll love that, Lives4Disney. ::yes:: IPO is just top notch! Plus, it's just really cool to be so close to 2 major themeparks.

*whispering* split your stay....you are under my trance.....split the stay...BWI/GF RPC....:tiptoe:

Thanks for the review. I think you have a point about staying with kids. I was there with 2 of my niece/nephew and was very happy, but that trip was geered to them.
Looks like you had a dormer room which are smaller. Just an FYI to those thinking of staying BC concierge, not all rooms are this small.

Confirming that YC concierge lounge is just as small and quite a hit with many families with children. The convenience of the CL outweighs the price...all those snacks available "free" without having to go to the arcade or the marketplace while you have your coffee or nightcap. It is a busy place and very popular with young families. Sugarloaf was really popular with young families too, so close to the pool. Couples should probaby stick with GF RPC.

What a great review :)
Thank you for taking the time to share. Loved the pics also.

We've stayed at YC Concierge a couple times. After talking with the Concierge Manager for both BC and YC it is true that BC gets more families that stay concierge. The lounge is small and doesn't offer the larger softer chairs although there is a nice couch to relax on. Plus, there is a patio that you can sit on which has several table/chairs on it. The selections you mentioned are similar to the YC. Unfortunately Disney tells each property what they can and can't put out for concierge. Thus, the BC/C do not have a lot of flexibility in their selections. If there is dissatisfaction with them I would let Disney know...they do listen to stuff like that .... the managers hear it all the time but the pressue for change comes from those of us who take the time to comment.

Our room at the YC was beautiful. Some of them have couches and others do not. While we had the desk and chair unit, we also had another lounger type of chair beside the bed .... no couch though. The full balcony was wonderful. There was a table and two chairs out there . At night it was very relaxing to sit and watch the boats go across the lagoon and see all the lights and excitement at the Boardwalk. Concierge staff were absolutely dreamie. Took care of so many things for us! Can't say enough wonderful things about them.

The YC lounge is always much quieter than the BC even during Thanksgiving weekend. Seems there are fewer famiklies with younger kids. As we are older parents with an 8 year old DS -- high energy lobbies with lots of kids isn't my idea of fun ...so the Yacht Club was perfect. Can't beat the location.

I'm a little sad that we will not be staying there in March when we go ...We have a group of 10 of us going together and we are staying at the Wilderness Lodge. It will be our first stay there. We switched over after finding out the food court at POR was closed and were concerned about how crowded it would get if people from POR came down to use POFQ food court. And wilderness lodge was only $30 more a night. Queen beds are always worth $30 more a night for me.

One of the larger concierge lounges we have been at was the Animal Kingdom Lodge. We enjoyed the lounge itself ...had tons of room with lots of comforable chairs/'couches and a nice selection of food and drinks. The staff was excellent, also.

Thank you so much for your review, as always a well written detailed account, has given me food for thought for August:thumbsup2

We stayed at the YC,BC, GF & Poly concierge.
If you want less children YC & GF would be a better choice.
The BC & Poly do have alot of kids.
The Poly's lounge is 2 floors, so when the kids get noisy, the second floor which overlooks the first is a nice.

I liked all the concierge resorts except for the GF. level.

If you thought BC was noisy and crowded, you have to go to Hard Rock Hotel club level. The worst I've seen.

Thank you for your very detailed and informative reviews. I really enjoyed your V&A review.

Thank you for your review & the pictures.

Sorry you did not enjoy the resort, we were there last August & we loved the concierge.

THanks for the informative review! And the photos! The BC Concierge had been our top choice for our next visit. We are now leaning towards the Poly. I have read they have the best lounge. My in laws loved the concierge at GF! So much so , they lost track of time and missed our wedding at Sunset Pointe!

Thanks so much for an informative BC concierge review! I'd always wondered about the BC concierge lounge.

And about those couches you mentioned.... The Poly lounge has those! Right in front of the huge window, even! :thumbsup2

Do you have a review of the BWI concierge?

Thanx for the great review ... and for including the link to petfinder.com pluto: ... that's where we adopted our wonderful two pups from! ... paw: paw: :flower1:

Do you have a review of the BWI concierge?

I'll post clips here from our review of the last BWI trip. I didn't post them on the Disboards, but we write up our reviews after each long trip. It bounces around a bit, since I'm piecing in bits from several days, so you get an idea of foods, etc.:

Our room had 2 queen beds, and was very light and airy, something that I missed when we were staying at the WL and AKL. We could see parts of Epcot from our balcony – Japan and the Eiffel tower – and the room overlooked the quiet pool, so we didn’t get any noise from the Boardwalk. We did, however, get an odd smoky smell from the ESPN Zone – our room smelled like smoked barbeque during our entire stay.

We rested for a while in the room, then went out to the lounge for some wine, cheese, and crab cakes. The crab cakes were quite good, with lots of crab meat and not too much filler, and the outside was crispy and browned.

The Boardwalk Concierge was different from our two previous concierge experiences, at the GF and the WL. They have an actual concierge lounge (unlike the WL), but the CM’s here are much more accessible than the GF ones. At the GF, the concierge staff is stationed on the 3rd floor, and the lounge is on the 4th floor, so if you want something, you have to go down a floor. Here, we liked that the staff was always around, so we could pester them with stupid questions!

The concierge had showed us that we could watch Illuminations from the balcony of the concierge lounge, so DH set up his tripod, and we watched the fireworks from a distance. The view was pretty good, though of course we couldn’t hear the music or see the floating globes, but we could see the actual fireworks. After watching Illuminations, we went back into the lounge, and I had a glass of Chambord and a rice krispy treat, while DH had a glass of Godiva.

The fireworks viewing area in the lounge was virtually deserted, I guess because most people were in the parks.

We got up early, and headed to the lounge for some breakfast. I grabbed a bran muffin, some pineapple slices, and some honeydew melon slices, along with a glass of orange juice. Andy had a pastry and a glass of juice, too.

We got up early and went to the concierge lounge to grab some breakfast. I had a bran muffin, three slices of pineapple, and a cheese Danish with powdered sugar on top. Andy had a cheese Danish also, as well as half a bagel.

I got bored and went out to the lounge to see what they had for their afternoon offerings. The warm offering for the evening was a puff pastry with cheese and something sweet and red inside it. Neither of us could figure out what it was, but it wasn’t wonderful, so we didn’t ask the concierge staff.

We returned to the hotel, took a shower, and got some more snacks – crab rangoons this time – and some wine. While we were there, we asked Jessica from the concierge staff about a good location from which to view Illuminations, and she suggested grabbing a table at the outdoor Mexican restaurant. This turned out to be such a smart idea!

Overall, we really enjoyed the level of service that we received from the concierge staff here, as well as the variety of foods here. I liked that the lounge was quieter, with fewer children, and that the evening food offerings centered on seafood - yum :)

Cheers!

Thanx for the great review ... and for including the link to petfinder.com pluto: ... that's where we adopted our wonderful two pups from! ... paw: paw: :flower1:

Our Molly (now dead) :sad2: and Hannah both came from Petfinder.com - that site is great. I wish more people would use it, instead of encouraging backyard breeders.

Cheers!

Thanks for the great review Heather. I almost booked Beach club, but decided on Contemporary instead. I have been at alot of the concierge resorts too, and my favorite is the BWI. Robin is great, is a fellow named Steve still there? He and Robin were the best. Steve even gave us a tour of the Presidential suite. We are going back in December, almost wish I would have booked it for spring break. I wanted to try the other resorts. Thanks for the petfinder info, what a great way to remind people. I lost a cat a few months ago, and my heart is still breaking. I will be getting a dog and new cats soon from petfinders. My dog is 15, so I don't think it would be good to have a puppy just yet.
