ok I am not a animal person really but when we moved into our new house 3 years ago we made our dog a outside dog (we live out in the country).Well for christmas I let my dh make her a inside dog again ....we got her groomed and got her some breath stuff lol and I even went and got her a nice dog bed.She is a pretty dog (soft coat wheaton terrier)but I really HATE DOG SMELL LOL ...
This is a big thing for me but it made my dh very happy...if your not a dog person how do you handle it? lots of candles? lol

I have three indoor dogs, plus I had 3 cats (now down to 1 due to health problems). The most I have ever had is 5 dogs of my own at one time. I would never dream of keeping my dogs outside, for they are part of my family.

My house does not smell. Now I am not saying every day there is no dog smell, but when I keep the house clean on a regular basis, no smell. I vacuum regularly, keep the dogs bathed (this is a big one because our dogs have 3 acres to roam and are always rolling in dead stuff:sad2: ). We have hardwood floors with full room size area rugs that I steam clean on a regular basis. I use the carpet deodorizer and febreeze when needed. I try to keep some Renuzits (the one for strong odors/pets) around or if I am expecting company.

Because I an so obsessed with it, I usually do use a scented candle when we have company over (not family). But with all that said just keeping the dogs bathed, vacuuming and steam cleaning as needed is all it really takes. I have even asked my MIL (who we do not get along and she has no problem telling me the truth) and she has says the house does not smell like dogs. Perfect example, we tried selling the house about a year ago and one of our dogs gets car sick, so we had to leave her home in the cage that we covered with a blanket....everyone's comment car could not believe that we had pets.
Oh and I should add, my MIL is not a dog lover. She has no pets and never will.

yeh we had all carpet when the house was first built and I had a brand new baby and I guess I was just scared she would jump on the baby or poop on the carpet but we had wood floors put in and our dd is old enough to handle the dog so I thought it was time to go ahead and bring her in.when she lived outside she would go into our garage (which is insulated like the house) and she loved running outside but she does love being with us inside so I gave in lol I am one of those people who burns candles alot and is very into smells so it will be a change but we will also have her groomed once a month...

Okay so you have no carpet, only hardwood? If so and it is finished, try mopping more...I use plain white vinegar added to water, it help absorb the odors. Also another trick is to put out white vinegar in a vase or container, it will also help absorb the odors. Grooming and vacuuming really helps, but can be a pain. We now give the dogs bathes at home because it is cheaper :) I am a fanatic about my house not smelling!

thank for the tips! I have a place here that grooms her for 25.00 and they trim nails and do teeth and ears also...:thumbsup2 I think it will work out, I will deal lol I even got some pet friendly house cleaners. I dont hate dogs I just never grew up with inside pets.I even got some pretty smelling spray for her hair...the good thing is she does not shed!

I used to love animals when I was a kid and teenager. I'm 31 now and as I get older, I'm finding that I just don't like animals in the house - especially dogs. I don't like how dog fur feels, I think they smell bad, and to be honest I think it's gross when dogs get up on the furniture. We have two cats and they seem cleaner so they don't bother me, but we won't replace them after they've passed on.

How are cats cleaner?

oh noooo lol I really couldnt do a litter box lol i do not let her on the furniture....

I have to admit, I am not a dog person.
I can always smell them-either they smell like dog or they smell like dog shampoo. I am not saying that it's horrible-I just don't like it in my house. I also don't like the "accidents" they always seem to have. Stuff seems to come out one end or the other-in my house.:scared: I just don't like them in my house. I would like a outside dog but people get so judgemental when you keep your dog outside now that I just avoid having a dog.

I would love to get another cat-they do seem to be cleaner. I don't know if they really are, but my reasoning is that my cats never go outside and get into the garbage/dirt/etc. out there.

The problem we have right now is that my middle son does not like any animal. He will not touch them or go near them. I tried to get him to pet a baby chick once and he freaked out.

We tryed having a dog and it took too much time to
keep him happy, bad dog breath, poop on rugs, scooping poop
in the yard, tearing up everything ect.
So we have really good friends who really fell in love with
our dog and we let them have him. It worked out great
he has went to a good home that really had the time, money
and patience to give him what he needed.
I can't say that I wasn't effected by giving the dog
away (cried for over a year) but I knew that the family
would be a great fit for him. They love him to death,
bring him on vacation with them, spoil him.
I now have a cat which is a better match for my pace.
She doesn't smell, uses the automatic litter box.
So I've come to the conclusion that I am best suited
for having a Cat as a pet. I'm a cat lover.

How are cats cleaner?

Cats keep themselves clean. If you don't bathe your dog regularly, it WILL stink. :scared: And I find "doggie smell" to be one of the most repulsive smells on earth.

Then there is the 'bathroom' issue. I would rather clean a litter box than have to pick up poop and know that the grass my kids are playing on has been peed on by my dog over and over. :scared1:

Fortunately a dog living in the house will never be an issue...DH and I are NOT dog people.:dogdance: Don't get me wrong, I like dogs fine and will play with the and show them affection...as long as they belong to someone else.

We have :cat: :cat: :cat: :cat:! :scared1: 2 are very kids friendly...my DD3 can swing them around with no biting/scratching. 1 runs scarse. My oldest has been with me since I was 19 and I warned my DH when we got together that she was around before him and if he didn't accept her (let her sleep in bed) she would be around long after him too:lmao:

I have 2 dogs and 1 cat and still beg to differ that is why I asked.

The dogs go outside in the woods to potty . Its never in contact with the kids or where they play. Yea pups can stink, but I keep stuff on hand for that.

I love my kitty but I hate that darn litter box. I hate scooping it, its like playing in poop, Yuck! Plus teaching her not to climb on furniture and counter tops took forever. The thought of a cat on my kitchen counter is repulsive.

I think cats are easier to care for but cleaner , mmmmm, having 2 dogs and 1 cat, I don't really think so , IMOP!

:goodvibes I am just not a dog person. I am not a dog hater, but I am not going to go out of my way to be around them.
We have a cat, and I completely understand that people are not fans of cats. I put ours in our bedroom when we have company because I know that not everyone is a fan of cats.

What makes me crazy is that we have some relatives who have a dog that is about the size of a Shetland pony. We go to this house around Christmas and the dog runs at us at full speed. It is taller than both of our children so that is pretty scary for them. Every single visit to this house began with my kids freaking out because the giant dog was charging at us. "Oh he wouldn't hurt you..." they say. "Bull" I say. If a giant dog knocks you over it hurts, even if the dog is just "playing". I don't care.

Last year, I told my husband that we weren't getting out of the car until he had control of the dog. He got out and tried to hold it, but it was too strong and STILL ended up chasing us into the house. This year, I think that we will just say, control the dog for the 45 seconds that it takes for us to enter the house, or we aren't coming. It is too traumatic. I am not a dog hater, really I am not, but I am not willing to endanger myself or my children just so that we don't hurt someone's feelings.

My MIL has the most adorable well-trained Sheltie. This is a very sweet, easy-going dog. I love that dog, but I still don't want one!:goodvibes

I could never have a real friend that wasn't a dog person, it's just against my nature. Cats..Bleh...but dogs are like members of the family and much cleaner than most kids with their snotty noses and picking boogers and eating them....lol...I've had to keep snotty nosed kids away from my 79 year old dad for all the germs they carry but I've never had to keep a dog away...

I don't care for cats. I like small dogs, though. We don't have any pets right now because I just think I have enough to take care of as it is.
I'm sure as the kids get older we will probably end up getting one, but I don't look forward to the dog hair or the smell.

You sure know some grubby kids! LOL!

Our family is pet free and we LOVE it that way!

Totally agree. I am loving being pet free. Lost the dog last year and the cat
two years prior.
I loved both of them very much but I am enjoying the no hair thing and also not having the responsibility of having a dog/cat.
I like that the family can know go out for the day or the weekend and not have to worry about kennel arrangements.
I am sad to say but I am in no rush to get anymore:sad2:

I'm a dog liker...as long as it belongs to someone else. I detest dog smell and I don't care what you say or do...all dogs (with very few exceptions, my friend's Greyhound being the one and only I know of) smell. Clean or not. My brother's pit bull stole my heart. I love that dog, love him. I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Cats are easier but they can stink up a house in one trip to the litter box. HAHA We had to give our Bella away a year and a half ago. I miss her, but I sure don't miss the cat hair, the litter box, etc.
