So sorry in advance for the absurdly long post but I need help and have a lot of thoughts running through my head. This is in no way resort bashing, just scattered feelings and opinions of one family.
Our family has owned VWL points for several years now and love going home for the holidays each year. We love the fireplaces, the natural beauty, EWP, beautiful lobby, Christmas decorations, and quietness we find there. I could go on and on about all of the things we love about VWL, but that is outside of the problem we are having. Just know that VWL is truly our first love!
We have also enjoyed the other DVC resorts (weve stayed at BCV, BWV, VB, and OKW), especially at other times of the year such as spring break when we want to celebrate the return of spring with lots of action and time at the pool. Given all of that, we recently purchased a re-sale contract at the BCV to complement our beloved VWL. I actually wired the final amount and we closed last week. Weve read so many wonderful things about the BCV on these boards and enjoyed our stay there as well. People seem to love BCV, and just the fact that you cant pool hop to SAB seems to make people want it more. There is something about the exclusivity of the resort pool that adds to the allure and resale pricing IMO. We didnt necessarily love BCV more than other DVC locations but we bought BCV over the others because of the stronger resale potential.
Well, fate stepped in and we took an unexpected trip to WDW last week. We stayed at AKL on an AP rate and took in a few days of relaxation and sun. We didnt expect to fall so hard for this resort. It was top notch in all respects, from the flavors of BOMA to the blue-green waters of Uzima pool to the incredibly accommodating and friendly staff members at all levels. Our stay was magical! The AKL reminded us of VWL in many ways, but with its own personality and charm. Anyway, while I am sitting poolside, my DVC guide calls me to tell me that my BCV waitlist for points has finally come through. I had been on the waitlist for months and didnt know when or if I would ever make it to the top. I actually meant to call him before we left to tell him we had closed on a resale and to go ahead and take my name off of the list. My guide tells me that the docs are on the way to my home, the points are already in my account, and I am good to go. I was so shocked at his call that I didnt say anything about just having closed on a BCV resale or whether we even needed more points.
On our way back to the airport, we stopped by BCV to take it in again and kick the tires so to speak. We wanted to get a gut check on whether we wanted to buy the additional points. We got out of the car and walked in the side way, by the quiet pool. What a different feeling! White concrete and light colors everywhere. I tried to smile while my heart sank. We continued in through the elevator area looking in at the TV room. It was beautifully decorated, but seemed uninviting and worn comparably. We walked through the sun room hallway that leads to the lobby, past the furniture with chipped paint, and it was crowded and loud. I was still trying to smile through some major buyers remorse. We walked into the lobby and asked a few questions about BCV to the DVC desk person. She couldnt answer and sent us to the check-in area for help. The staff there was nice, but it was a forced nice, not a genuine nice. They couldnt answer our questions either and seemed sort of ambivalent about trying. We really wanted to like the resort, but things were not feeling good. We walked out by SAB, and took a breath. Yes, this is why we want points here. This pool makes it worth to us. We do want some points, but do we want more points here? We ate at beaches and cream dirty menus, dirty floor, average food. I was craving BOMA coconut curry seafood stew the whole time I was eating my hamburger and shake. We talked about the positives of BCV, almost trying to talk ourselves into liking it. Sweat was poring and I was stressing. I had just paid a lot of money for BCV points and I really dont like it here. I think it was the immediate and sharp contrast to where we had just been that made it hard to take. We shakily left and didnt speak much the entire way to the airport.
Please help me know what to do. Should I go ahead and take the points my guide is offering, maybe use them a year or two and then resale, knowing that I can use the points at other resorts? I would probably make some money on my points by then. BCV seems to be the hottest property DVC has going right? Is there a realistic possibility that DVC will expand to AKL? If so, I will be the first in line. Should I abandon the BCV points and just buy additional points at VWL that we love so much? It would cost a lot less. I am really confused on what the best decision is. I am usually a logical thinker but all of the emotion and resort love has got me confused and unsure. Please help. What would you do in my shoes?
