Bathroom sprays question

I seem to remember someone saying that it's a good idea to bring some type of air freshener because the stateroom bathrooms do not have fans. Does anyone do that? If so, what do you bring?

My first thought was to go to Bath and Body works for their fragrant sprays, but first, would that be too strong and bleed into the hall? And second, I was concerned because they are in aerosol cans with explosive warnings (just like hairspray!) and I don't want it exploding in my luggage on the plane.

So what is the best thing to use for this purpose?

We've never taken any bathroom odor cover ups. I don't recall if there's actually a fan in there or not. I think there's one in the "shower" side of the bathroom.

If you think you need something, how about saturating some cotton balls with a mild fragrance and bringing them along? Just transport them in a baggie, and then place out on the shelf in the bathroom.

There are not exhaust fans, and disinfectant spray is an excellent idea. We use the Lysol small travel size (I think Amazon has them), since they are small, effective, little to no odor (no perfume coverup smell), and we just discard it at the end of the cruise. I wouldn't get anything that just adds a smell to the bathroom, too much trouble and doesn't eliminate the odor problem, just masks it (unless you like having a bathroom scent, as some do). IMHO YMMV and other caveats!

I know this sounds very indelicate, but Poo-pourri really works! (I know from experience) It's available on amazon as well as some gifty-type specialty shops... You spritz (or drops if you get the packets) a little in the bowl before going and voila...

Edit: and it's not overpowering smelling- and I'm very "scentsitive"!:D

We love the Bath and Body works room sprays. I always travel with couple. I love them not only for the bathroom but also for the room as a whole. You only need a small spritz because they pretty strong.

Yes, these were what I was thinking of. One spritz is VERY strong, though. Also, unless I buy it in Orlando, I have to take it on the plane... which says not to take things that are in a can and have 'exploding' warnings on them. I also have to find a hairspray I like in a pump for that reason.

PrincessSchmoo, I like the cotton ball idea, but I wonder if it would be strong enough when needed.

Over50visits, Lysol something or other might be the way to go.

Churchladychurchlady - never heard of poo-pourri, heh, but I assume the name says it all. I'll have to watch out for that, but I'm not sure that's the answer for my kids, who'll dump it out, not use a drop or two.

I fly with hairspray in a can and have never had any problems. This probably way TMI, but often when the need arises, especially for my husband, he'll just go use one of the public bathrooms on the ship as to not stink up the room. I have heard really good reviews of the poo-pourri also, but have never used it.

This is our family rule...If you need to poop, go down the hall to the public restroom! Glad we are not the only ones who do this!!!:rotfl2:

We always bring B&BW's Scentportables for in the bathroom. Not only does it cover up the smell, but long after we're home, that scent reminds me of our cruise. We used the Caribbean Escape scent 3 years ago, and I still feel like I'm on the ship when I smell it! We also get the foaming soap and hand sanitizer in the same scent.

You probably won't need it. On a cruise you eat a lot so you poop a few times a day or more. Poop mostly just stink when you only go about once a day when it's been in your body a while.

I am a firm believer in the Poo-Pourri! We have used it the past couple of cruises and it works well!
We bought some of this in the past and it works great. However, it occurred to me to try lemon scented Pledge for about 1/4 the cost and it works just as well. 2 sprays on the surface of the water and you're good to go, pun intended!

I've flown with them in my carry-on as well as checked luggage and have never had a problem, throughout the U.S. and Europe. My DDs travel with aerosol hairspray and have never had an issue. Aerosols for personal care and toiletries are not prohibited on flights.

Hmm. I've seen what happens to a water bottle on an airplane. That surprises me, as the pressure changes can crumple the water bottle.

I just checked the Air Canada website. So it sounds like you all are right. It's fine to pack an aerosol, if it's not too big. Awesome!

Checked baggage:
Liquids, gels and aerosols (e.g. hairspray, medicines containing alcohol, perfume, and cologne) are accepted in checked baggage provided:
  • Their total capacity does not exceed 2 L or 2 kg (75 fl. oz.) per passenger.
  • The net capacity of each single item does not exceed 500 ml or 500 g (18 fl. oz).

I have brought an air freshener, not because of the lack of fan in the bathroom- but because the smell coming from the drain the year before was awful! I just bought a cheap air freshener and left it behind.
