Hi, We are thinking of re-doing our bathroom and removing the tub. Going to put in a large shower with a bench instead. I want to tile my walls all the way up. I had allure come to the house yesterday and after 4 hours I'm pretty happy with everything I picked. The price is $19,868. My husband wants to do it himself. Did I mention that Allure can do it in 5 days. LOL Has anyone re-do their bath and if so how much did you spend? Did you do it yourself? Also inside your shower someone said to use tile instead of a shower base. (not Allure) I think this would look nice however is it slippery? So many questions. any advice is welcome. Thanks:) Just wanted to add the bathroom is smal 61/2 feet x 6 feet including tub.

I've never heard of Allure, but we just had 2 bathrooms done for about $12k total. Completely gutted both. Took much longer than 5 days though! Still, for a small bathroom that seems pretty high, even with a bench added.

To tile the floor (we did this in our shower) we were told to get tile no more than 1" by 1". Two reasons - less slippery and because the floor will be tilted slightly toward the drain and larger tiles can crack.

We did the 1" tile and it's not slippery at all.

My in-laws did the same thing to their bathroom a few years ago. They took out their large garden tub and put in a large shower with two benches. They were able to find a pre-fab arcryllic unit from Home Depot that was installed. They then took their old single stall shower area and made it into a closet. They also had the double sinks removed and put in two pedastal sinks with one of those kitchen pantry units in between them. They had tile put down on the floor.

I think they spent under to up to 10K on things. They had people come in and do it. My in-laws are not do-it yourself people. However, i do know they were surprised at the cost, it being nominal to them, as they sat on doing it for years because of the estimates they received.

Good thing they had it done. A year later, on a trip to Vegas, FIL would fall on an excursion to the Hoover water retension structure (not sure if the DIS filter would block that word). FIL spend the rest of his Vegas vacation in the hospital and then when they arrived back home, had to have surgery on his ankle. FIL has pretty weak ankles, because twice after this, FIL has gotten out of bed in the middle of the night and fallen and rolled/broken his ankle as well. The larger shower was a godsend, as MIL could get in and help FIL while he was in casts/wheelchairs/etc.

Alure just did our kitchen and bath. We are not happy campers. They started may 3 and the job still isn't closed. The heat doesn't work in the kitchen or bathroom. The faucet leaks in the bath, the marble saddle has a crack in it, oh and our door doesn't close right. We have not paid the last 15,000 installment and they don't seem to be coming back to our house to fix the problems any time soon so we will continue to hold the payment. Since they have done Extreme Makeover they seem to only be interested in the really big jobs.

Do an Internet search for reviews of Allure's 5-Day baths. I think you'll change your mind after reading them.

Some/most of the reviews are downright scary :scared1:

I would not spend that much! Get more estimates for varying types of material. There should be good tile guys out there looking for work, so you should be able to get a deal.

I wouldn't use them until you also get bids from a couple of local reputable contractors.

Complete DIY bathroom remodels are nearly always a major PITA, because unless you can take a couple of weeks' vacation to really concentrate on the work, it will probably put you out of your bathroom for at least a month, if not two. Also, tile requires specialty tools, and you either need to buy or rent them while you do the work. I did a major tile job on our bath after we had to tear out the walls due to a leak, and while it wasn't hugely difficult, it was very nitpicky work for an amateur, and it took me nearly a month to do working on it just nights and weekends. (At the time we were strapped for cash and had no choice but to DIY.)

What I would suggest as a possible compromise is to have professionals come in and do the floor pan, the tiling, and any in-wall pipe work that needs to be done, and then your DH can put in the fixtures and do the painting and final sealing if he is comfortable with basic plumbing. Large shower pans are super-easy to screw up -- you really have to be careful about leveling and sealing them properly so that the water will drain correctly.

Thanks, I just looked up their reviews. :confused3 Don't know why I didn't think of tha. LOL Anyway, if we were to do it ourself we are having a tile man come. I know we wouldn't even attempt that. After he left I really wanted to hire him but now after sleeping on it and reading your reviews we can live without the bathroom while the work gets down correctly. We have two other baths in the house. Thank you all for your advice.
