**UPDATE**
Well the guy I called out just left. Let's just say we are very lucky our house didn't catch fire. The wiring is fried all the way from the thermostat to the breaker box. We are looking at $1000 of rewiring in our home. We will have to wait a week or two to fix it. I am just glad it happened on a night that we where home and not out and about. I am very shaken up about what could have happened.

We have base board heat in our home. Each room has its own old thermostat on the wall. The living room was getting very warm today, so I lowered the temp. As the days goes on it is still pretty warm. I turned off the thermostat and the heater is still on. The thermostat and wall were both getting warm. I ended up just turing off the breaker to the living room base board. Can we replace the thermostat on baseboards like you do with other heating sources? We replaced the one in our old house but it was a gas furnace. Or do you think something elase is wrong? Any info would be great! Stuff like this always happens when DH is away.

I would replace the thermostat first, baseboard heat is very simple. Make sure the replacement thermostat you get is a Line Voltage thermostat. :thumbsup2

Thanks I will be heading out today.

Somewhere in between us must be middle ground. Because I have the opposite problem right now. The heat isn't coming on when it's supposed to. And turning up the thermostat doesn't always work. (Thank goodness it's been a warm winter so far.)

I would suggest getting a new thermostat. Since knowing an electrician, I found out they don't last too long. Mine is about 4 years old and I guess it's time.

We think ours is the orignal and our house was built in 1979. I am thinking we should start replacing all of them.

We had this problem and we changed our thermostat, and it still didn't fix the problem. For us it was the hot water heater was set to 150 degrees, which was to hot. Now one wouldn't think that that would have an effect on the heater, but it does because of the copper pipes. Copper pipes conduct heat and so when the hot water heater was trying to heat the water to 150 degrees it was passing the heat onto the copper pipes.

Well DH got home last night and tried to replace the thermostat. As soon as, we flipped the breaker back on and turned on the new thermostat the breaker went. He is back out on the road again. Who do I call an electrician or a heating and cooling place? Thanks goodness it is in the room we don't really use. But we do have family coming over for Christmas.

I would call the electrician, but a good heating, cooling place would know too. Sounds like your DH may just have the wires hooked wrong. Sometimes a new thermostat does not wire the same as the old one. :) Let us know what you find.

I would call someone that has experience with electric heat, probably a heating and cooling place. An electrician is ok too but if there is something wrong with the radiator itself they won't be able to fix that. If it is just the thermostat, the heating and cooling place will be able to fix that too. Also, the thermostat may have been installed improperly and that is why it blew the circuit too?

Glad to hear that you finally found out what was wrong, and thank God nothing bad happened.
