Why do they do this?

I ordered a DVD directly from B&N in their store. I saw it online for $15.98. It came in within 2 days as opposed to online 3-8 for shipping. I had to have it for a gift by the 20th.

I just picked it up and the price was $27.99 for a single DVD!

Why is there such a difference? The cashier couldn't tell me

I could buy 3 chapter books for my DD for the difference

Because by ordering something online (and avoiding the store) you are not paying overhead for that building, for that cashier and for those comfy chairs.

Most of the time the online/catalog division is different than the brick and mortar division and costs/specials/discounts can vary wildy.

Even TDS does it - Princess dolls you pay $16 for in the store are $9 online.

Now if you ordered it online for instore delivery (regardless if you used a PC at home or at B&N), you should have a receipt or order confirmation emailed to you that stated what the price should be. I'd look for that so that you can get the price you were looking for. I would have asked to speak to a manager about it...

I have found the opposite to be true with the Disney Store---often their stuff is dirt cheap in the store, but still full price or just on it's first mark down in the catalog or online.

Oops--I also wanted to add that while I agree with the previous poster's assessment of that you are not paying overhead for the store, I think that Barnes and Noble online is cheaper because they have to compete with that *other* online mammoth bookstore-----------AMAZON. Amazon doesn't have a retail store, and if B & N is going to take any share of the online market for books, they have to be as cheap as Amazon. Ya know what I mean?

I think the overhead aspect of it makes sense, but that's a heck of a difference, not just a few dollars.

I reordered the same exact DVD online yesterday and with shipping it came to $18.96.

I will return one for $27.99 when the other arrives. I refuse to be overcharged that much.

I ordered a book for my DD from them in the store and they are not charging higher from the website, I confirmed that with them...

I don't like dealing with B&N, DH loves their stores. I can't tell you how many times I have placed orders online where the item is in stock according to their web site. I'll get a confirmation email about my order, I check my account/order status and it shows that the order is pending. Then several days later, I get an email telling me that they can't fulfiill my order because they don't have the item. It has happened many times... Their online store stinks!

As long as Amazon has what I'm looking for, I'll buy from them. I have never been disappointed!

I called and asked about the price difference, this was last Christmas, and they did say it was the overhead cost that was raising the price.

I saw a book online for $11 and in store it was $23!!!

Glad I'm not the only one noticing! This is annoying!

I just hate to feel like I'm being being taken advantage of. Overhead or whatnot, I don't think that is a fair policy. What if I didn't have access to the internet, I would have never known

FYI:
You can return stuff that you ordered online to the B&N store but you will not get your money back- you will get a store credit.

Thank you legs22 - I have inquired about that. I paid cash in the store for the $27.99 DVD. I just got an email from B&N telling me the DVD has been shipped today from TN - hopefully we'll see it by saturday.

I ordered an Xmas present for ny nephew from B&N, and it hasn't gotten here yet! They said a week! I wanted to have everything wrapped early! I hope that they don't mess up!
