Banking window for transferred points

Just had a strange chat with MS.

There is a possibility I need to cancel one night of a 277 point reservation made with the following points:
2 of my Feb 2019
150 transferred in Feb 2019 points
125 banked points

My question was confirming that if I cancel a night I will get the Feb 2019 points returned and not the banked points.

After many "please wait while I look into this with my supervisor" I was told I would get back my points first followed by the transferred in points.

But, I was told the banking window for my Feb 2019 points is 2/1/2019 - 9/30/2019 but the banking window for the 2019 transferred points is 2/1/2019 - 1/1/2020. Why would the banked points have a different window?

I would not count on that as I don't think it's written anywhere however there have been other reports of being able to bank transferred points after what would be their native banking deadline.

I found this on a different board. It was posted 7 years ago. I haven't looked for anything more recent:

"Also...It is a little-known secret that you can actually bank transferred points even if they are after the banking deadline. Both of the transfers I did I got for really good deals, because the original owner forgot to bank them, so they sold them very cheap since they were about to expire and be worthless to them. I got one of them for only $6 a point about a week before the points expired, but then I immediately banked them so I was able to have a full year to use them. Shh... don't tell anyone."

Thank you both for the information. I don't plan on going past the native banking deadline and I can't imagine why DVC would treat banked points so differently. Go figure!

I was told this as well by MS. It has to do with how banked points are “held” in the system. They don’t have the same restrictions on them as regular points. I believe it is true that you can bank them up until the last day before the UY turns over. Again, I was told this same thing months ago.

This makes me want to start stalking the transfer board for more points from distressed sellers. I wish there was something in writing on the DVC site which explained this situation. Doesn't make sense that they would allow this situation and hold these points to a different standard.

Often, the distressed points are already banked which can’t be transferred. It’s unusual that someone simply forgets to bank their points and has to offer them for transfer.

MS allows a one time exception to bank points past the deadline, so one should forget twice!
Or someone had to cancel a reservation before 30 days but after the banking deadline.

I wonder if, having 2 contracts at the same resort, they would allow me to transfer points from one contract to another to avoid losing them after the deadline? That would be an interesting loophole to know about!

I was wondering the same thing. I want to know more about it, but awhile ago, I ran across this, then found out it wouldn't work in my situation.

I had purchased a contract with over 260 points that were going to expire in January. By the time I got it, there was literally NOTHING available to book, and we were already scheduled for a visit to Poly, using our Poly points (scheduled 11 months ahead, so we couldn't switch the new points to that). I thought I could transfer them and solve my problem, BUT THOSE POINTS WERE BANKED, so I could not transfer them. Well, I scrambled a lot and eventually rented out those points. But it would have been much easier if I had been able to transfer them, then bank them and use them in the next year.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

You can’t transfer between contracts. You can only transfer between memberships. If it’s a different use year (which would make it a different membership), you could use this loophole, but not if they’re the same membership.
