Banking points - what did I do wrong?

\

So, my concern is that I have 1 banked point in a VGC room (November), and wanted to try to move that one banked point to a reservation in mid September. I was told that I would have to cancel the VGC room to reallocate it to the mid September reservation. They can't just move it unless I cancel the VCG reservation, which I'm afraid to do bc I may lose it. :(

How many contracts do you have? Is this a 7 month booking? And if you have multiple contracts do any different ones have points available? One can get that done if you have the extra points to do it in different contracts so that you can deselect the contract from the booking - assuming it was 7 months. 11 months gets locked.

I have two contracts, same use year. This was within the 7 mo booking. I think the problem is that I have been booking and canceling, playing around with possible trips then canceling, plus renting.... so everything is now all messed up.

I plan on probably cancelling the VGC room in November (it's one night, the resort isn't even open, and it was supposed to be with expiring points for my best friend from college who lives 20min away) before end of September (my banking date, Feb use year), and hopefully they can allocate that one banked point to another reservation, and I will then bank all my points before the banking date...

Do you have enough points in the contract you didn't use for the reservation to switch to? If so then you can make it happen.

You would go into modify and select VGC for that night. It will then take you to pick the contracts so uncheck the one you've used that has the banked point and check the other contract. It will then use those points. Then you can go into your Sept reservation and use that 1 point there. If you really wanted to use the original contract for VGC just go back and go thru the modify process again and just reverse. But if you don't have enough points in the second contract then it won't work.

I don’t think that you can remove the first contract when you modify a reservation. Every time that I’ve modified, the contracts that were used for making the original reservation are locked in place. I could add other contracts from the same membership but I could not remove contracts already used and I couldn’t change their order.

My experience as well. Now, yesterday, it did pick up banked points from the 2nd contract when I checked it because the rooms were still available. So, even though they were booked in the home resoet time, it allowed the banked points to be used and freed up the original points.

But, it would not let me unlock. If the points in the other contract had not been banked, I don’t think it would have allowed the swap.

Usually with a 7 month booking you can. Of course not always but it's a rarity for me that it's locked on a 7 month booking. And it's not a rarity for me to bank after making reservations and then reallocate or to decide to use a different contract and free up something else for home resort purposes.

11 month bookings lock whatever contracts you select though.

What I have recently noticed is that if I have modified an 11 month booking at 7 months, even with a different resort, the original contract stays locked when I modify Agaih.

I had my room booked at RIV for December and then changed it at 7 months to split stay and eventually got all nights at VGF and it kept my RIV points locked.

I agree that it is worth the call, but once the trips have been completed, they can not go back and change them.

However, if there are still trips, as mentioned, things can be reallocated.

The only time they can not is if you have several trips and want them moved around between them, That can not be done,,,only points sitting in your account not used can be switched around.
Sorry if I wasn't following her situation as closely - I assumed she had upcoming trips too. In my case, I had to move trips because of Covid, so I had some banked points on a trip that was later cancelled, and a current reservation that had been made with current points, so when I cancelled the banked points trip, they were going to expire. I asked them to move them around so it was using the banked points and they were able to, but I did have to do that in person on the phone, and I did have an upcoming booking.
Yeah, all my 2020 trips were pre-lockdown (by only about 2 weeks)! Maybe Disneyland will reopen in time and I can actually use those leftover points there... Or if they cancel the stay outright (the night I have booked is for mid-september and hasn't been cancelled yet) maybe if I call in I can get a nice MS rep and they will extend the banked points by 2 months. Then I can use them on my March trip to WDW! Oh well, you live and you learn!

When you modify the system still looks at it as an 11 month booking from that aspect. It is not what I call a 7 month booking. If you cancelled and did a straight out 7 month booking it would not lock it. (in most cases - it is Disney IT and one can never say never)

Yeah...it is certainly an interesting piece. But it does show that if one wants to swap out to different points at 7 months, it won’t allow you to use non home resort points for rooms even still there unless they are banked or borrowed,

If one wants to free up at 7 months for a different resort, with a different contract, it is better to just start fresh.

The right CM can remove the lock once they identify it is actually now a 7 month booking.

Makes sure you get with MS to figure out for certain what happened while you may still be able to fix any issues where the best points were not used.

I’m a long time DVC member with 3 contracts - all at same resort with same use year. While not exactly related to the OP’s original inquiry, I did learn an impt tip the other day when calling MS in advance of booking a large Grand Villa reservation for next year (as my contracts are pretty simple I don’t often have questions, but with all this banking & borrowing due to Covid I was getting confused :)

You experts will already know this but I did not somehow:

When booking a new reservation online - in order to use all of your Banked points first across multiple contracts, you need to be sure to select ALL of those contracts when making a reservation. If you only select one contract it will use the Banked points in that contract first but then will pull from the new points for that contract, thus you will still have Banked points leftover in the other contracts which are not being used.

So one can see how it would be easy to use newer points before banked ones in error :)

I want to add that even when that is done, there is a screen before finalizing that makes it seem like it will not take banked points but once you actual book it does,

It is confusing and we have seen posts of people who didn’t complete the process because of it.

I posted this elsewhere but it even picked them up the other day when my first contract was locked..,so the system will indeed recognize all banked and borrowed points, as long as the contracts are checked!
