Banking Points Question

We recently booked at AKL for January and banked the remainder of our Dec 2020 points into next UY. The banking deadline is July 31st.

two questions:
1) We want to move to SSR but currently nothing is available. Can we waitlist SSR (do we have to use banked points?) if it doesn’t work out, does it affect our banked points at all?
2) if waitlist goes through, and we cancel AKL, do we lose those points if it is after
our banking deadline of July 31st?

So in summary: if we waitlist SSR and it goes through AFTER the banking deadline, do we lose the points used to book AKL?

Thanks so much!!

I know this part:
2) If you cancel the AKL, the points will stay in the DEC 2021 UY. You won't lose them. But they retain the status of banked if they were 2020 points originally.

why do you want to switch to ssr? Most of my points are at ssr 305 out of 555. Only own there because it’s cheap. Only stayed there three times and I have been ssr owners ever since the first year they opened. The treehouses are nice.

We love SSR! But the main reason is we are considering inviting my boyfriend’s parents. Him and his dad love to golf, and we all love the spa. Not sure if those things are available now but hopefully will be by then. Plus, they will be really into the dining so we love that it is walkable to Disney springs. We’ve found that service at in park/ hotels is hit or miss, usually feeling pretty rushed out so they can turn the table. We’ve had nothing but lovely experiences at disney springs & will likely eat there every night so we’d prefer to not have to bus.

I have no idea how to quote so @Stargazer65: thank you! The points that were used for AKL are Dec 2020 points so they haven’t technically been banked yet. That trip was booked before the points were banked to 2021, and the deadline to bank is July 31st.

If the reservation in Jan 2022 was booked with some 2020 points, then they have become banked. They had to bank them into the 2021UY to make the reservation, even if you did not. So if you cancel, they will not come back to the 2020 UY, they will stay in the 2021 UY as banked points.
Confusing, I know. :teeth:

The simple way to say it...if you cancel a reservation, all the points for the reservation are returned to the UY the reservation was in.

That makes so much sense! Thank you so much. I’ve seen a lot of posts about losing points. It sounds like points are only lost if: they are booked for the current use year, and reservation is cancelled after the banking deadline. So in my case, a reservation happening in Nov 2021 (Dec 2020 year), cancelled after 7/31. I think I finally understand haha

Yes, they would be returned to 2020 UY, and then be lost Dec 2021 if you don't use them because it is too late to bank. You got it. That is why it can be a sketchy prospect to book a reservation really late in your use year.
