Banking points question.....

Can't find this using search,any help is appreciated..... how does banking points work? I am thinking,I may need to bank some extra points this year,they were transferred into our account ,and they have a different UY than our other points.
1-Can I bank points that I transferred in?
2- Once we bank the points,what are the rules for using them to make reservations? (i.e., does it have to be within a certain time period?)
3- For instance,if I banked some points (4 month ahead of the UY end) and then 3 months later decided I wanted to use them anyway this year,is that allowed?
I would bank them so I would be sure to have them for next year,as I don't think I can use them all this year.....but if things turn around,would I be allowed full use of banked points,or is that wrong?

You can bank points that have been transfered to you. They retain the same use year month that they have from the original owner. Banked points must be used for a trip that ends by no later than the last day of the use year into which the points have been banked. Once banked into the next use year, they cannot be brought back into the original use year for a trip during that year.

Example, someone transfers to you points with an Oct use year and they are points issued Oct 2008. You could bank them today into the Oct 09 to Sep 10 use year. They then must be used for a trip during that 2009-10 use year. Once banked, they cannot be used for any trip before Oct 1, 2009.

so.....if I'm getting this right.....points banked into next years UY can't be used till the beginning of the next UY,right?
So the decision must be made before banking,if I intend to use any before this UY ends-
I'm trying to figure out how to use the points well,I don't want any to be unused,but I know I have to bank 4 months out to keep them another year.....
I guess I have to ask this b/c the points we transferred in are a close UY date with our intended travel plans,so I have to make some decisions.

You have it right. Once they are banked, they can not be used until the first day of the new UY.

Posters here could probably give you a better 'visual' on both your points and the transferred points if you want to post more details about them (Use Year, amount of pts, how many points you may need for your trip & when)

Your travel dates must fall within the UY of the points you want to use.
So be very sure before telling MS to go ahead with banking the points;
you don't want to bank them if doing so takes them beyond the trip dates that you need them for.

If you bank the transferred points you've got into upcoming UY that is where they will stay, But if you have your allotment of upcoming UY points still available (you haven't as of yet borrowed from your upcoming UY) then you could borrow points from your upcoming UY allotment into the current UY if you find you'd need points for a reservation you may subsequently decide to make for during this current UY.

5fordiz- thanks! I was thinking about that idea also,but there are so many details,I forgot to ask the question!
That's an important thing to remember,in case I do decide to bank some points (hubby is job nervous right now) then borrowing some from next years,if I miscalculate is helpful.
I think calculating what we'll need is pretty straightforward,once we finally decide on dates/length,etc.
