Banking Points on a Resale?

So we finally closed on a small 50 SS contract and have the points showing in the system. It was a bankruptcy sale so I had to pay back dues and fees all the way back from 2012 so I know no points were used since then.

Use year is April so we were desperately trying to close before April 1st to try to have a chance at using the 2016 points but didn't quite make it.

I actually spoke to someone at DVC back in March and he said they can and have made exceptions in the past with allowing members to bank points on a resale. Has anyone had any luck with this? If so, any pointers to get it done?

I just called DVC now and she wouldn't do it but, since I was told they have in the past, I'm being a bit stubborn and would like to see if I can make it happen.

I haven't heard of that kind of exception.

There has been a one-time exception for banking pts after the contractual banking window has closed. But not after the use year is completely over, no.

I think MS won't bank them because the 2016 points are now expired since it's now April 2017. I've seen mention of MS giving a one-time banking exception when someone forgot to bank by their banking deadline but their points were still within the current use year.

Thanks- I wouldn't have thought so either but the person I was talking to seemed very knowledgeable in all things DVC as we discussed RCI trade ins, resale process, etc... He seemed a lot more "with it" compared to some of the CMs when I call.

Unlikely and I have never heard of it being done. But doesn't hurt to call again and find another CM. CMs have done things for folks that I never thought was possible.

Did he say they'd bank expired points, or that they'd bank points even though they were past the deadline? The banking deadline for an April use year is November 30th. I've heard of them allowing an exception to allow banking after the deadline, but not after the points have expired.

He was aware of the exact situation as we discussed it and said he has seen the exception made and it would need to come from a supervisor.

I agree with supersnoop about the exception. Maybe there have been exceptions for expired points but I don't recall anyone ever posting it here on the DIS. I have seen exceptions for missing the banking deadline.

I'd say give a try again. Ask for a supervisor and point out that you made the contract whole by paying dues on points back 5 years that they otherwise were not going to get. I'd also send an email on it.

I don't see how DVC can "give back" expired points, which is what they would be doing if they allowed one to bank after the points expired Those points were already used as "breakage". They do not have any points to "give back" for that purpose, unless the Developer would be willing to donate some for that purpose. Can't see that happening (especially for a resale).

Sorry, but it appears there was either a miscommunication or a misunderstanding or perhaps old information.. The only exceptions that I am aware of were for missing a banking deadline. They used to routinely bank for a Member after the banking deadline for both direct and resale purchases, but even that courtesy has been rarely given to resale purchasers since DVD started differentiating between direct and resale contracts. AFAIK, the exception was never granted after the end of a use year, even for direct purchases.

I'm not aware of an exception to bank points after the deadline has passed. If you could have closed and recognized in the system by the end of the UY, they likely would have banked the 2016. Unless you can make the case that DVC/DVD made an error, I think you'll be using 2017 and beyond but not 2016 or before.

Thank you- I'm going to give it one more try today and email. This really should have closed the last week of March but Disney gave me the wrong information a couple times (they first told me they had everything only to turn around 2 weeks later and tell me they did not so I had to resend). If I closed in March I could have at least had a chance to use the points. Ah well- we will see- I like a challenge. :)

Existing member, called DVC MS re resale contract I'm trying for & inquired as to banking policy. was told if under contract & submitted for ROFR before the banking deadline, they would likely make an exception and bank points to next UY if desired.

Note this is not the same as the UY points being expired as in your case.

Did your contract indicate that the 2016 points were null/void if not utilized before the end of March? If so, unless you took the name of the person you spoke to in March @ DVC, think you are likely out of luck.

Never hurts to call back again & ask to speak to a supervisor to ask, good luck

Chances are that the previous owner was not permitted to bank any points being that far in arrears. It would take some luck for them to let you bank if you are past the deadline, but it never hurts to ask. Disney folks enjoy creating magic.

I'd take the stance they held it up and you likely could have banked had that not happened and see what happens. I suspect there's a good chance they'll make an exception. They'll likely count it as the one time double secret exception but that's likely worth it in this situation.
