I think I know the answer to this but I wanted to check with the experts! This is a hypothetical question ( or rather series of questions) so I am going to use round numbers to make it all easier.

Lets say I have 200 annual points.

I bank all my 2006 into 2007.

I book a reservation for November 2007, using 100 of those points. First question, does the computer use my "banked" points first or is there even a distinction?

I then book 4 rooms for December, each use 100 points. I use up my 2007 points then borrow 100 from 2008. I book these rooms calling day by day.

Question #2, does the computer know that each room during December was booked using banked, borrowed, and current use year points? If I canceled one of these rooms would I have banked, borrowed, and current use year points all left in my 2007 account?

If the answer to Question 1 & 2 is yes, then is it possible, to "move" points around on reservations? For example lets say I need to cancel the November trip. Can I move points around so that all original 2007 points were used for that reservation before I cancel it so therefore I could bank those points (if I was in my banking deadline)?

I then book 4 rooms for December, each use 50 points. I use up my 2007 points then borrow 50 from 2008. I book these rooms calling day by day.

First you have only ised 300 points so you still have 100 2007 points left and would not be borrowing 2008 points :lmao:
The rules are if you borrow points and cancel a reservation these points can not be banked and will expire at the end of your use year.
the 2006 banked points will be used first and if they were not then if you go to bank your points it will be adjusted as this is the correct way for MS to use the points.
As far as the rest some have said it can be done others have had a hard time.. MS should be able to realign your points I personally would try to aviod this as some of MS are not very familiar with doing this... I am sur you will get a response from someone who has done this but I have seen similar posts and some were given problems and others not.

You are using all room reservations point count at 100 with 1 room in Nov and 4 in Dec thats 500 points with 200 a year you would use all banked 2006 all 2007 and then 100 borrowed from 2008 .

I have done this this year ( not exact number wise ) and when I canceled a room with multi u/y's they did indeed reallocate the points to free up current U/Y points that I could either use or bank.

Keep in mind use year plays a role with the dates you are booking. If you have a December use year, a November 2007 stay would be in your 2006 use year.

As stated, in order to properly respond to your questions, you need to state what your use year month would be. Remember Use Years are not the same as Calendar Years.

Someone with a June Use Year, for example, would be using 2007 UY points for a November vacation. But someone with a December Use Year would be using 2006 UY points for that same November vacation.

Becca,
I think you have an excellent handle on how this all works. I'm impressed! MS will work with you to use banked and/or already borrowed points first so that you can save current use year points for banking. MS will also move around points within already-made reservations, if need be, to give you the best scenario for freeing up current use-year points in the event you need to cancel part of a reservation. One caveat: some newer CMs might have more difficulty than those with more experience, so if you feel the CM with whom you are speaking is not proficient, then you might want to call back.

I know that Use Year is an important factor (as several folks pointed out), but I was trying to isolate the concept of banking and borrowing. . . lets say it was a February use year.

BeccaG, Your use year is only significant to determine which year the points come from. Simply your banked points are used first then your current year then your borrowed year. When you speak to the CM just make sure they are doing it correctly. I'm not sure how they handle the canceled room, but it makes sense that the same formula should be used. That way your older points will always be used first.
