Banking After Borrowing Question

If I borrow some points (from 2013) to make a 2012 reservation, and later revise that 2012 reservation to a lower point trip (where I wouldn't have needed to borrow), can I use those 2013 borrowed points 'before' I use the 2012 points?

Here's the situation:

I waitlisted a MK View BLT 1-BR for 8 nights in October - 333 points. I have 160 points banked from 2011 to use in my 2012 use year (April) - so 160 (2011) + 160 (2012) = 320. So reservation would require 13 borrowed points from 2013.

But say something comes up a four months out and I want to shorten my trip. Instead, my reservation is 222 points. Can I use 160 points from 2011, 13 from 2013, and 49 from 2012? Can I then bank the 111 leftover 2012 points into 2013 (still five months before the end of my use year)?

I guess my question is an order-of-use one. Meaning do they allow borrowed points to be used before current points? I think the answer is yes, but I wanted to double check with the experts before putting myself on a MK view wait-list.

Yes, you need to be very specific on the phone with MS though. You can not put back any points you borrowed. Use banked and borrowed points first and then bank any current points that are left if you won't use them for the current UY. I did this exact same thing last year.

I did the same thing last year as well. It worked out fine, and the Customer Service Rep knew exactly what to do so that my points weren't used in a way that didn't help me the most.

I've done this a couple of times as well. In my case, I had trip 1 that used most of the current year points. Then I booked trip 2 which I had to borrow a few points from the next year. I ended up cancelling trip 2. At the time I cancel, I asked MS to switch the borrowed points to trip 1. Note that I had to explicitly ask. MS did not automatically check that I had trip 1 using current year points that could switch with the borrowed points.

And of course you need to do this before your 4-month window so you can still bank your points.

As already implied, not all Member Service cast members are created equal. Be sure to specifically tell the cast member making the new booking that you want to use banked/borrowed points first. Seasoned cast members will know to automatically use expiring points before points that can be banked, but you never know who is on the other end of that line!

I am not the OP but thank you.
I will be calling MS next week at my 7 month mark to move my ressies. I believe I have borrowed points in my ressie but I really am not sure.
Therefore, I need to tell MS that I want to use any banked or borrowed points first when they are moving my ressie to a new resort, is that correct? It is all very hard for me to understand and I really am a normal bright person with a good job LOL
Thanks.

Yes, what you want to do is simply tell them to be sure that when they change your current reservation and rebook the new rooms to please use any banked or borrowed points before using up current UY points.

When they are done making the reservations, ask them to give you a recap to make sure this was done.

If, however, you are really confused, then you could give MS a call before your 7 month window to ask someone to go over your account--ask them to tell you what the status of your points are in both your 2011 and 2012 UY as well as the status of the points that were used in the reservation you currently hold.

Good luck!
