Banked points when canceling

I had a question on what will happen to my points. I am currently booked to stay in September, but am considering switching to Jan 18 due to some real life things that have popped up. I am using banked points from 2017 however for this trip. If I cancel the trip will those points go back to be banked?

I'm sure this has been answered a million times, but I couldn't find a thread skimming the first few pages
