Bank transfer query

Hi, thinking of purchasing through resale and was wondering about money transfer. When you go to the bank to get a dollar cheque made out do you get the official ex rate or the tourist rate or something inbetween. Does each bank have the same system?... TIA

if I remember right the bank did the tranfer there was no cheque to send

I bought at AKV in July and made a money transfer through the bank. They just took the details of the account I was sending the money to, filled out a form and I think it took about 5 days to leave my account.
I got 2.02 dollars to the pound when the transaction went through so it must have been the official exchange rate that was used not the tourist one.
It cost me about £40 in total though but I'm not sure if the charges were linked to the amount sent. I've recently read a discussion on these boards where people sent the money much cheaper, credit cards seem to be the way to go.
