Bandana & eye patches for pirate night?

Do they still give out bandanas and eye patches on pirate night on the ships? Does it depend on length of cruise?

The Magic, Wonder, Dream, and Fantasy ships still give out bandanas. No eye patch. The Wish does not give out anything.

Bandanas yes, eye patches no. I plan to purchase a cheap pack or two of eye patches to give out as pixie dust to other cruisers!

I presumed it was because they give out those fairy godmother wands when you get on the ship.
If that’s the explanation, that’s remarkably cheap of DCL.

They hand out bandanas for the other four ships’ Pirate Nights, but just….don’t for the Wish?

How much can those bandanas possibly cost DCL, in terms of the overall budget? I will bet my left hand that it’s a percent of a percent of a percent.

I'm certainly not justifying it, it's just the only thing I could come up with in my head as to why Disney doesn't pass out bandanas on the Wish for the pirate night. It definitely seems intentional on their part.

My apologies. I wasn’t trying to shoot the messenger.

I think your guess is probably accurate, and assuming it is, my scorn was directed toward DCL for charging the premium they charge and still cutting corners (which, again, would not surprise me).

If those bandanas cost DCL more than a nickel each, I’d be stunned. 4,000 bandanas @ $0.05 equals $200. Even if you want to factor in the minute labor cost of placing them in the room during turndown service, how much can providing these bandanas really be impacting DCL’s profit margin?

It’s too small to even be referred to as a “rounding error.”

No need to apologize, I just wanted to clarify that I absolutely agree with your sentiment. With as much as DCL charges (especially for the Wish) they should be able to provide a themed bandana for pirate night in addition to the plastic wands at embarkation.

I know there were theories when the Wish first sailed that maybe there was a supplier issue and that's why they didn't have bandanas originally (since it first sailed during the height of Covid) but I think that was quickly shot down once people saw that the other ships were still getting them regularly.

$200 x twice a week =$400 x 52 weeks is over $20,000. Overall that may be insignificant but consider it from the department budget. If it comes under entertainment and I'm the Department head responsible for cutting the that budget...well there's $20000 without cutting staff. Budgets aren't necessarily seen as one bottom line total. A budget is divided into departments/categories.

Great for smaller kids but actually, the bandanas are so small as to be almost unusable for adults...

Certainly not. But just as you said, these budgets are broken down. I sincerely doubt that “bandanas” and “personnel” are the same category, much less the same department.

I even further doubt that any Department head was in a unique position - only on the Wish - where they were faced with a binary decision of “in order to save $20k, either I axe the bandanas, or I have to fire someone.”

Whatever DCL’s profit margin is per sailing, I highly doubt $200 was going to be missed by any department, whereas the bandanas would be (and apparently are) missed by a number of guests.

Well if the $20,000 out of a department isn't a budget issue then what's the reason?

I’m sure it was a budget issue on some level. I just don’t think it was down to anything resembling a choice between cutting bandanas or cutting staff.

My larger point was that people like the bandanas for Pirate Night. I have no empirical evidence to support that, and could be totally wrong; I can only say that in my eight cruises, every Pirate Night was packed, and most people on deck who weren’t in costume were sporting a bandana.

But assuming the bandanas are as popular as perceived (and if they aren’t, then why isn’t DCL saving similar dollars by nixing them on the other ships?), I’m just hard-pressed to believe that killing a popular item like this was a cost-cutting measure that needed to be made, and that our hypothetical $200 per sailing could not have been made up elsewhere.

Agree. They don't really fit around your head (like a pirate bandana would), so on our last cruise my mom and I tried to tie them around our upper arms. They didn't stay for very long, unfortunately.

My solution (since we have lots of DCL bandanas) was to take 2 of the bandanas we were given and sew them together, creating a larger triangle.
