My son chose the oboe as his instrument. Today was the first day of instruction.

I dropped him off at 1030 and by 1230 he learned one song, and started the second. We have already had the person recommend private lessons!

However, we had not one but TWO BROKEN REEDS! Oboe reeds are expensive, $10-13 a piece.

So off to the music store I went to comparison shop for reeds. I found one place whose reeds were $4 less than other stores (same reeds)

The teachers are impressed... and have been telling him to stick with it.

I guess learning the oboe was a good choice

oK saw I am sure I am not the only one that was think American Pie

Then I have to stop giggling and tell him never mind...

::yes:: :teeth: This one time at band camp...

Cindy B,
That's great that your son is doing so well :D . I hope he is able to make the reeds last a little longer.

My DSs played sax (alto and sop), clarinet and oboe. I remember how pricey the reeds were for that oboe. On top of the expense....it was a double reeded instrument.

Hope your son has a great summer band experience. Both my kids were in marching band all through HS.

Our oboes don't march...they either play clarinet in the fall, or march with the color guard. Your son must be talented!

Band is such a good way for kids to get integrated into the high school experience. My daughter freely admits she was a "band geek" but she had a good time and met lots of kids who made good choices!

DS didn't march with the oboe....he marched with his alto sax his freshman through junior year. Senior year he did the percussion bells in the pit.

He played Oboe in symphonic and concer band.

If your child is really into marching, have her look at Drum and Bugle Corp at www.dci.org There are a few DCI fans on the Dis. DS had more than a few friends that went on to march with the Madison Scouts and Cadets.

This is elementary school band.. his class is all 8-10 year olds. So you are looking into 3rd-5th graders.

I loved playing oboe...mainly because I was the only one. The band tunes up to you since the oboe is the hardest instrument to keep in tune.

Over a couse of 6 yrs, I started on clarinet (concert & marching bands) , then added alto sax (marching & jazz bands), then oboe (concert & jazz bands). Even made all state after just 6 months on the oboe. (Made it on clarinet several times.) Carrying all those instrument cases along with books was never fun.

Definately price for reeds....and they do chip easier since there is no mouthpiece backing it up.

Wish him luck from me.

Oh yeah.....and I too snicker at "band camp" --- due to American Pie....and my own experiences at band camp. LOL
