Banana Boat ride question

A dumb question, but for someone who isn't very athletic, (i.e. out of shape!)
If I fall off the "boat" which I heard is likely, how do I get back on? Is it easy or will I need a lot of upper arm strength?

by the way, I'm a good swimmer and can be some what athletic if I WANT to, but I choose to sit and lay in the sun! :lmao:

Don't really have an answer for you as I sort of sabotaged my own banana boat ride last year. Single Mom here, not real comfortable in the water but wanted to be brave for my 2 DS's. Put on my lifejacket and hopped on board. The guy driving the boat tells us (7 of us on our banana) to hold your right arm straight up if you wanted him to go faster or straight out if you wanted him to slow down. :rolleyes1

This is when my panic attack kicks in...picturing myself being thrown off and not being able to get back on and being stuck bobbing in the ocean for hours while fish nibble on my toes...other 6 guests have their arms straight up...mine is straight out so he must go slow for me - one big, fat party pooper on board. Boy did I get flack for ruining the ride. They called me the banana weenie. I chose stingray snorkeling this time :rotfl2:

Yes, you do need alot of upper arm strength to get back on the boat. It was not easy. I speak from experience. I was sitting on the right side of the boat and we were riding along just fine. Next thing I noticed was that everybody on the left side of the boat fell off....before I had a chance to laugh at all of them, the whole right side of the boat fell off. If you are not comfortable in the water...I would not recommend this ride. Also, if your child cannot swim...I would not recommend it either. It was very difficult to get back on. I think 2-3 men on the left side of the boat finally got on and stablized the boat before the women and children were able to get back on. One older lady could not get back on. She had to ride the rest of the ride with the boat driver.

My husband has this on video...he laughs everytime we watch it. To me it was not that funny. Although, the experience was fun...I have not repeated riding the Banana Boat in my last 3 trips to Castaway Cay... I may in the future though.

Yikes, I'm a pretty good swimmer, but lazy at working out/cardio. Maybe I should think twice about doing this....

anyone else????? :confused3

Oh go for it ! Its really a lot of fun. I was 44 years old for my 1st banana boat ride and I'm signed up again for my June cruise. No one fell off when I did it, and if you do, the others on the boat will help you back on. I actually think it's easier to stay on if you stay relaxed and go with the movement of the boat. My arm muscles were a little sore the next day, but worth the fun I had.

There goes the banana boat ride for me. I was so worried about asking that same question!!!Much props to you. I am not in very good shape. I do have 2 toddlers that keep me on my toes-however, that doesn't count for staying in shape. :yay: I think i'll stick to being a beach bum during our port stops.

Ok, after riding the banana boats last year, I take comfort in knowing I did what I could to "warn" others. ;)

I copied and pasted the post below that I had written after I had gotten off the Magic last year. I have also included links to other banana boat threads so you can be well informed ahead of time. There is more information about banana boats that you'd ever care to know in the links below, but when I was trying to make my decision on whether or not to ride them, I poured over every banana boat post in my quest to see if I'd make it through the experience alive. I think I'm kidding.

I was hesitant to try this ride, but my 16 yo dd wanted me to (yes, I'll blame her ;)). We rode this last Fri. Never again! My arms still ache as I write this. I felt I had to hold on too tightly to enjoy the ride. My daughter loved it, but said she doesn't need to do it again.

I didn't mind so much the burning eyes from the salt water splashing in your face, it was the holding on so tightly and the fear of falling off that took away the fun. I know others love this ride, but it is not my thing. I ride TOT and Rockin Roller Coaster effortlessly, but will never do the banana boats again. :scared:

The lady that checks you in says if you follow the rules, you will not fall in. Don't believe that! It only takes one person to lean the wrong way, for most of you to fall in, no matter how tightly you hold on and no matter how diligently you lean to the center of the boat. :tilt:

We were pretty far out, the water was pretty deep, about 35 feet (I asked) when someone in the front leaned outward and one by one, 11 of us flew off the boat and into the water. I scraped my leg and my arms are bruised, so it hurt a little. When I landed in the water head first, I didn't know which end was up. I swallowed sea water during the fall also. It's pretty funny now thinking about it, but I couldn't wait for the ride to be over as soon as it started going fast and getting very bumpy.

After the fall, as we bobbed in the water trying to catch our breath and make it back to the banana boat, I knew I couldn't go through that again, so I requested to ride in the boat. A teen girl who was also frightened, and her mom, also rode in the boat with the guys. One little girl, about eight years old, got back on the banana boat with no problem.

I can't say enough good things about the two gentlemen running the ride. They were awesome. They did say the sea was choppy that day and apparently, the parasailing for mid-afternoon got cancelled.

I think I'm glad I tried the banana boats. Now I will never have to wonder about them. It gave us a good laugh and a great memory! My daughter said it was quite a sight seeing 11 people flying off the boat in an almost domino affect. :rotfl: She fell off too, but managed to hang on to the handle a bit. Edited to add that my daughter wore goggles, but I did not. I also noticed that closing my eyes to stop the stinging salt water made me less in control of being able to stay on the boat. In other words, I needed to keep my eyes open in order to stay on the boat better.

I just want to warn some of you who might be hesitant, that you should expect to fall off.

Do they make exceptions to the age limits?dd will be about 1 month to her 8th birthday when we go and can swim well(level3-4 red cross) and has been diving in 12 feet of water without trouble since she was 5.Will they let her ride?

E-mail DCL and ask. My DD turns 8 on the day we will be on CC and wanted to do the banana boat. The online reservation system would not let me reserve a spot for her. I called DCL, but the person I talked to said I would have to wait till on the ship to ask if she could ride. So then I sent an e-mail to DCL and they got back to me in 1or 2 days with approval for her and they also reserved the 11am ride for everyone in our family. I included my reservation # and the # of people who wanted to ride. Good luck!

Boy, I have something to think about. The part about falling in the water and not knowing which end was up sounds scary.
Just my luck I'll get a group of teenage boys on my ride. They will purposely lean over to make everyone fall!!!
(my advance apologies if you're a teenage boy!!!)

Decisions, decisions......

Hi, I am the "which end was up" person. Now that it's been a year since I rode the banana boats, I am still glad I did it. misseulalie, falling in the water and not knowing which end was up happened very quickly. The hardest part was holding on for dear life while the boat skimmed the choppy water. If you do not mind falling off into 35 feet of water and are in the mood for a thrilling ride, go for it. You do have a life jacket on, so I never felt like I wasn't able to stay afloat.

If you do decide to go for it, I think it will be a fun memory to look back on.
