From an earlier post in a thread that has since been locked:

At a Disneyland Frontierland mercantile store, a video screen of Disney classics with music plays in the background. One of the songs, "The Ballad of Davy Crockett," has been altered. The lyrical section "trusty gun" has been replaced by "trusty mount."

I happened to be in a Disney Store today and they played the Ballad of Davey Crocket, and the words "trusty gun" hadn't been changed. So anybody yearning for the old lyrics can head out to their local mall and wait around for this classic.

The Ballad of Davy Crockett
(Version Used in the Disney Movie Davy)

Version as produced for Walt Disney Records
Lyrics by Tom Blackburn
Music by George Bruns

Born on a mountain top in Tennessee
The greenest state in the land of the free
Raised in the woods so's he knew ev'ry tree
Kilt him a b'ar when he was only three
Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier

Fought single-handed through many a war
Till the enemy was whipped and peace was in store
And while he was handlin' this risky chore
He made himself a legend forever more
Davy, Davy Crockett, the man who knew no fear

He went off to Congress and served a spell
Fixin' up the Government and the laws as well
Took over Washington, so I heard tell
And he patched up the crack in the Liberty Bell
Davy, Davy Crockett, seeing his duty clear

When he came home his politic'ing was done
And the western march had just begun
So he packed his gear and his trusty gun
And lit out a-grinnin' to follow the sun
Davy, Davy Crockett, leading the pioneer

trusty mount? (meaning horse)
I can't see how they made the change FIT...
how would that fit the rhyme scheme?

When he came home his politic'ing was done
And the western march had just begun
So he packed his gear and his trusty mount
And lit out a-grinnin' to follow the sun...

Is anybody SURE that they actually made the change...
or did somebody just THINK they made the change?

Maybe...

So he packed his gear and his trusty mount
Then he lit up a cigar and began to shout...

Oh, I guess not. ;)

I remember learning this song in elementary school. We also learned the Titanic song where the chorus was...

Husbands, and the wives, little children lost their lives.....

Sorry, that's gotta go, too!

Yup! This was on a thread that got a bit out of hand.
Nevertheless, Tom Blackburn's lyrics were deliberately changed.

The story of "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" is featured in the new book Music of the Alamo: From 19th Century Ballads to Big-Screen Soundtracks. There's a chapter devoted to the 1955 chart-topper and its incredible popularity around the world. Fess Parker, who portrayed Davy Crockett, wrote the Foreword to the book. And Phill Collins, who won as Oscar for "You'll Be in My Heart" from Tarzan, wrote the Introduction.

They Might Be Giants reworked the song on the 2008 CD, Disney Block Party.

And "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" is still a fun part of the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue.

But at the Hoop, they don't do most of the lyrics, anyway.

"That's what us Legends do..."

Did Davy kick the bucket?

No, he just turned a little pail (pale.)

Indeed. The original tune (sheet music) had 20 Blackburn-penned verses (+ additional non-Blackburn-written verses for the edited three TV episodes that were turned into the theatrical release, Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier, in 1955). Performing the entire song would take up a bit of time. But the 1 1/2 verses that are performed there always get the crowd singing the popular refrain, "Davy, Davy Crockett...."
