It was very irritating though. Fortunately the breeze seemed to be in my favor most of the time so I could sit on my balcony without choking on their disgusting smoke. Don't know what one can do other than to report it as I didn't feel up to a confrontation with these people. Both parties were there the entire time that we were.

Two words: Super Soaker. Their smoke is in your space; put some water (or other liquid) in theirs. It's only fair. And if you're not up to confronting them, vacation with me and I'll be glad to do it. :thumbsup2

OMG!! I almost did this to a smoker at MGM or whatever it is. We were in line for Fantasmic and this man was smoking but keeping his cig down at his waste...he really could have burned a child. I couldn't get to our Disney mist fan fast enough.

:cheer2: Let's look at it this way, you can't make the whole Freaking World , Smoke Free, Good God, Give the Smokers and Non-Smokers a break!!!!!! Smoking has been around as long as i 've been born, if you don't like Smoke, stay in the House, Them Smokers have just as much rights as us, Guess i'll catch crap over this, huh.
Also, for the record, our Walt smoked!!!!!!!!!
Not trying to raise any Stinks, but fair is fair!!

I have no problem with smokers smoking in designated smoking areas.

Yes, Walt smoked and died of it. I don't want to follow that particular example by breathing in smoke from my neighbor's balcony or anywhere else "Them" smokers can keep away from me.

and yes he did, but you can't stop the whole world from smoking, they pay just as much as you and I, and yes it is a Nasty Habit, and tough as snuff to get rid of, been there, done that!!!!!
I don't see a thing wrong w/ Smoking outside, for Grace sake, you are OUTSIDE, WIDE, OPEN SPACE!!!!!!
Not trying to stir the kettle, but don't see what all the stink is about, except putting smokers down all the time.

Unfortunately it's not a wide open space; it's directly adjacent to someone who is not a smoker and chooses not to inhale the second hand smoke. Your right to smoke ends where the non-smokers' right to breathe clean air begins. I'd have nothing against your smoking as long as it didn't creep over into my breathing space or leave the odor long after you were gone. Disney has specifically stated that balconies are non-smoking areas.

But when you stay at a Disney resort you agree to abide by their rules. And one of them is not smoking unless you are in a designated area. If you don't like the rule, don't stay on property. But if you think you are above the rules you can expect people to be angry and complain.

No one on here was bashing smokers. Just those people who smoked and couldn't be bothered to go to the smoking areas like they are supposed to.

Well said!!;)

If you pay for the outside area which you are occupying, you should be able to smoke at it. Is it not true smoking at a DSA will cause someone to smell smoke whom comes close enough? It's pretty simple, just designate an area of the hotel that may have balconies/patios as smoking balconies. I agree smoking in the room shouldn't be allowed, after all, it's Florida. It's never too cold to step outside. I don't personally have any children, but I wouldn't like the idea of having to leave them in a Hotel room alone so I can smoke. Again , my solution, take 20 rooms that may be above/next to each other that are designated smoking balconies. Make the designation clear on the reservations if you so want (or do not) want this type of room.

Second, isn't other things that people have allergic reactions to (I.E. Grass, Pollen etc) Located outside? What about pollution? Or Bees?

I won't be staying at Disney Resorts again, ever, until they as a hospitality business can respect me. And that attitude will continue when I quit.

Hey are the moderators on vacation or are smokeing threads OK now? If so I have plenty to say on the subject :rotfl2:

Disney is one of the few places I've stayed where you can't smoke on the balcony. Cruise ships come to mind - all of the rooms are non-smoking but it's allowed on the balconies. But if Disney makes rules like this then they should enforce them.

OP, I'm sorry that your complaints were ignored.

I just went for a short trip with my mom and aunt.

They are both smokers, my DH and I are not and we both have severe allergies and my DH has asthma. So, I for one was thrilled when the resorts went non-smoking.

Anyway - I couldn't believe how much effort and time my mom and Aunt Judy had to spend thinking about when and where they could get their next puff. It was ridiculous. They did abide by the rules in the parks, but as far as the resorts (we stayed at POR in Alligator Bayou) they felt it was okay to go out to the parking lot and smoke because quite frankly they aren't in good enough shape (largely in part due to the fact that they smoke like fiends!) to walk to the designated areas. We were in Building 37 and pretty close to the parking lot. If I had not been there, I'm certain they would have just walked outside and smoked right outside the door - but I informed them of the rules.

We couldn't walk to the car from the tram without them having to light up. I had to walk really fast and get way ahead of them so as not to choke from the stinch. It's ridiculous.

I noticed more people smoking in non designated areas and I think it is due to the fact that all rooms are non-smoking. So, I'm rethinking my initial happiness regarding the new policy. It may have made things worse. I don't know...here's what I really think (and I'm sure it'll make some folks mad):

IT'S LETHAL - IT CAUSES CANCER AND/OR COPD. FOR GOODNESS SAKE - STOP!!!!! My mom has COPD and yet she continues to smoke. It's a drug addiction as strong as illegal drug addiction. It's just legal.

And shouldn't be.

Whether it's a good thing or not, or an infringement on people's rights, many hotels and resorts are going completely smoke free, and it's not just in the US. When we were traveling back from Kazakhstan we were watching German TV in the airport, and the EU was pushing a complete public/business smoking ban for all of its member states. In China- we saw many new restrictions on smoking. When we were there in '06, they didn't have non-smoking anything. On this past trip, there were entire hotels that are smoke free, or at least entire floors, and smoking sections in restaurants, etc. Big change. And talking to our translators, the bans are more for just the Olympics.
