Someone mentioned in another thread that baking items will soon be going up in price due to the holidays.

My DH works at Wal-Mart and last year, as a Christmas gift, they gave employees 10% off of groceries. Do you think this will compensate for the higher prices or would it be better budget wise to go ahead and stock up now?

I am stocking up on baking items now. I'm not usre if you have Aldi's in your area but its a great place to stock up on baking supplies. Their flour and sugar are about the same price as at Wal-Mart but things like chocolate chips, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and walnuts are much cheaper than our Wal-Mart here. Yesterday the cheapest chocolate chips at Wal-Mart were $2.69 a bag I picked them up at Aldi's for $1.69 a bag. It was the same price for white choc chips, and butterscotch chips.

I hadn't heard that prices were going up on baking supplies. I just bought them because I can't wait to start making christmas cookies!

I always find backing items go on sale around the holiday's. Why do you think they are going to go UP in price this year?

I always buy mine around the holidays when the stores are putting them on sale.

I have always gotten Choc Chips for $0.99/bag, and things like sugar and flour usually go around $0.99/$0.79 respectively.

I watch the weekly ads and stock up when things go on sale.

Hadn't heard anything about price increases, other than what they have already done across the board.

:confused3 One of the other Christmas threads somewhere on the disboards said that baking things usually go up in price around the holidays. And, you know me, I believe everything I read on the disboards. ;):thumbsup2

:lmao: So true for many of us!!

In watching some other threads here of late, I am realizing there are people on here who post things just to see what kind of reaction they get from others.
So I am taking things with a grain of salt until I can verify facts elsewhere!!

Even if prices do get raised during the holidays, sale prices more than counter the hikes.

Hi there, fellow Wal-Mart spouse! My DH works for WM too. (Doesn't it annoy you to hear so many WM bashers? :confused3)

Anyway, even as a WM shopper, I vote for stocking up when there are sales. Start keeping an eye on your sales circulars (I'm partial to Publix here in the south) and you'll soon see sugar, flour and other baking goodies on sale.

I remember last year right after Thanksgiving, Nestle chocolate chips were on sale BoGo at our local Publix and they had a $1 off machine coupon, so I got 2 bags for I think $1.39 or something. I ran out of that store with TEN bags of chocolate chips - most of which are still in my freezer b/c I still had plenty in the pantry!

Another thing to consider - if you are a Sams /Costco member, check there. I think Sam's has 10-lb Domino sugar right now for about $5.

I agree with AmyKay...keep an eye on supermarket circulars. I live in TX and Alberstons has Pillsbury baking items on sale this week along with Martha White. To make it even better, they have quadruple coupons for .25 cents and under, triple for .33 cents and double for .5o cents coupons so I can some stuff for .25 cents!:cool1:

We have an Aldi's near us - what do their chocolate chips taste like? Are they real chocolate or chocolate "flavored"? I prefer Hershey's chips, but I also use Nestle, depending on which is cheaper or if I have a coupon. Does Aldi's have their own brand?

I started stocking up couple of weeks ago. Wegman's had there flour $.99 for 5lb bag, sugar 5lb $1.99, and $.99 for 10x sugar or brown sugar.
I will watch coupons and sales to stock up on more like baking chips, and condensed milk.

They are real chocolate and taste just as good as Hershey or Nestle.
