Baked potatoe question

How long do you cook your potatoes in the oven wrapped in foil? What temperature do you set it at? Mine always seem hard in the middle!

TIA!

I stab them with a fork a few times and nuke them for about 8 minutes (no tin foil, of course).

I stab mine with a fork and cook them for an hour and a half at 350. I once read that wrapping them in foil actually results in a steamed potato, not a baked one, so I pop them in naked. :flower:

I only wrap mine in foil if I need a lower oven temp- like if I'm cooking a roast at the same time. If they're alone, I do them at 400 for 35 mins. If you wrap them and bake at say 350, give them at least an hour.

Bake them "naked" (no foil - that steams them) at 500 degrees for an hour. I know that sounds crazy but I read last year that that's how restaurants cook theirs. And lo and behold it's true! Restaurant quality fluffy spuds, right out of my oven :)

I put mine on high heat (like 425) and bake for at least an hour. Depending on the potato, it sometimes takes longer. I really hate when they aren't done in the middle.

I've never cooked one "naked" before? How does the skin turn out like that? Do you put anything on it first, or just throw it in there? Do you put it straight on the rack or on a pan?

The skin gets kind of hard and leathery. Personally, I don't care for them like that because part of the potato right under the skin gets kind of "weird" and I don't care for it. But, you can oil them before you put them in straight on the rack.

Thanks, I think I know what you mean by "weird" too.

I bake mine for an hour and a half at 350, no foil, and decrease the time if the oven is hotter. I only cook them at 350 if I have something else in the oven that needs to be done at 350.

Truth be told, I frequently forget to get the potatoes in soon enough, so I cook them halfway in the microwave first.

I scrub the potato, put a few holes in it, rub olive oil on it, sprinkle kosher salt on it, the place it in a 375 degree oven on a rack over a cookie sheet, for about 1 to 1 1/4 hours depending on the size of the potato. Perfection!

Were you at my house last night?? I wrap them partly in foil, leave the top open so they don't steam. Especially my sweet potatoes...they ooze something awful and make a not so nice smell when it hits the oven floor/heating element!!
I love the olive oil and kosher salt routine. I'll be trying that next time. Thanks.

I have to try this. I usually do them at 350 for 1 1/2 hours. I like the crunchy skin when they are cooked naked. What ever you do, poke them with a fork before cooking or you will end up with a BIG mess!

I do this except I dont poke any holes. My kids even eat the potatoe skins!

Now that sounds yummy!

I usually wrap in foil, don't like them nekkid either. I do broil until done. Big potaoes take a long time, like 2 hours.

Always poke them to check doneness. I LOVE them soft and fluffy.

I put them in the crock pot on low heat before I go to work in the morning. When we get home in the evening they're ready. Sometimes we'll have a "baked potato bar" for supper. All I have to do when I get home from work is gather all the fixins.

We must have read the same article, because after reading someplace that was why restaurants pototoes were always good, I started doing mine this way, and they are great!!

This sounds really convenient! Do you spray the pot or oil the potatoes? Poke holes in them?

I just wash them and poke holes in them. They'll create enough steam to prevent sticking.
